I have a 18 month old lab that I plan on breeding once I get the health clearances this winter. I have been reading Snakefoot:The making of a champion by Robert Wehle, along with some other older books. There are also lots of books on canine reproduction and breeding as well as early puppy socialization.

Are there any books anyone would suggest reading prior to taking this endeavor?

Thanks

You want to read Genetic of the Dog, by Malcom Willis and Born to Win, Breed to Succeed by Patricia Craig. Genetics of the Dog is very scientific and if you get the basic lingo you'll get a huge amount from the book. Born to Win, Breed to Succeed is much more lay with more common language and much less scientific talk, but it lays out an awsome strategy and you'll understand much more about how it all comes together. I'd suggest reading it first.

Next, I'd look into Lloyd Brackett's series on Planned Breeding. It's phenomenal and you should read it twice. You'll get a ton from it. Lloyd Brackett was famous back in his day and did great things in his circle. Here's the link: http://www.dogchannel.com/dog-magazines/dogworld/planned-breeding/planned-breeding.aspx
