Can't make the THF DIY elk hunt this year. I'm looking for a recommendation for a fully guided/outfitted elk hunt for 2017. MT, WY, ID, UT, even BC or elsewhere in Canook land. Preferably someone I can meet and talk to at DSC in Jan. Me and a friend, 2X1. Horse and mule operation preferred. Thanks.

I recommend Gila and Apache outfitters in NM, you will have to draw the tag which is 1 of the hardest draws in NM (unless you pay a bunch of $ for the landowner voucher) to hunt the Gila but you can't draw if you don't put in for it.

Would love to hunt the Gila, and I'll probably follow your advice and start putting in for it, but I kind of need something definite for next year that I can plan for.

CR, look into Heavens Gate Outfitters. They are out of Idaho and offer horseback pack-in & out hunts. The guys I normally hunt with have been wanting to do a pack-in & out trip as well. This is one of the outfitters we are looking into. I don't have any personal experience with them, just word of mouth from a couple of people. We are looking at 2018 or 2019. Interested to see whom else you find and decide on.

Thanks Ringworm. I know guides are notorious for blowing off their websites, but Heavens Gate Outfitters' site doesn't look to have been touched since 2011. I may still give them a call.

Any other suggestions out there?

The guy we hunted bear with in BC was really good with my daughter on her hunt. He also does elk and moose and we saw a lot of everything except WT and mule deer up there. Lots of elk in the evenings. I need to get the name of the guide we were with.

Hmm.....that doesn't sound promising. If I hear of or find anything else I'll forward it along.

I know the guys at Heavens Gate personally, I have known a couple of their senior guides for many years, I don't know the owners as well but I am pretty sure they would take good care of you and have good stock and a good area. I know both Nick and Wes have been guiding there longer than Andy and Karen have owned the business so they and possibly some other senior guides are what really make the outfit a good choice. Andy and his crew might be at the DSC show, I know he used to do a lot of shows.

I am an outfitter in Idaho as well, I don't do the sports shows and I don't do horseback hunts but if anyone is looking for lodge based or drive in base camp hunts for elk or any other big game check out our web site www.clarkforkoutfitters.com

Good to see you posting. LDbrown is a really good dude, if he recommends them they are top notch. LDbrown don't play with bears or lions also. He kills monster cats!!

Thanks again for helping me out of the bind on the mountain. Much appreciated cheers
