I need to replace the winch on a winch up feeder I bought used. I want to make sure I buy a winch to handle a 55 gallon drum full of corn, that will not get away from me. I almost bought a boat winch but I remember reading something about getting a brake winch. Not sure of type or brand that is reliable. Thanks.

You want a Dutton-Lainson brake winch. They come in 800lb and 1500lb varieties. The 800lb will run about $65, not including winch cable.

Don't know where you live but Texas AG is correct, go with the Dutton-Lainson brake winch. I make & sell winch feeders and you won't go wrong with the D-L 800 pound winch. Northern Tool has them if you are close to a store or will ship to your house. They also have 3/16" wire rope for a decent price. I have tried other brake winches but keep coming back to the Dutton-Lainson brake winch.
DO NOT use a boat winch sooner or later you or someone else WILL get hurt!!!! Hope this helps.
