running a cheap-o feeder bought at HEB which runs great but the batteries when clearly dead (because they don't spin the corn anymore) show as full on the charger and will not re-charge. Have had the same problem with two different brands. This may be an idiot question but what gives?

Did you do a voltage check on the battery? Can you hook the battery directly to the motor bypassing the timer to check it or have another 6 volt motor to check it on?

If batt has voltage and nothing's working you have another issue. Check wires for breaks make sure connections are tight. Also ohm out the motor to see if it's good.

If you run the batteries all the way down they will not recharge. Hook the battery charger up to the feeder instead of the battery to test.

IMO those charge indicators are junk. Sounds like wire connection issues/corroded terminals.
Are you using a solar charger?

get you a volt meter, it does not have to cost a lot but can ask most of your questions. You have been given some good advice though.

What re-charger are you using? Did you fully-charge a new rechargeable before installing into feeder?
A depleted rechargeable may show a 'normal voltage' until you put it under load (this is what confuses a lot of people with rechargables) A solar cell WILL NOT re-charge a new or depleted battery; it must be fully charged when put into service with a solar-cell (solar only replenishes the small amount used daily).

This is good advice. A sulfated battery can still show you good voltage i.e. fully charged but have little to no capacity. That's why voltage alone is not a reliable indicator on older batteries. Also fully charged on your 6 volt batteries will be generally be 6.4V or higher and that is after they have been off the charger for several hours. In theory 6.3 is fully charged but they are pretty weak at that point.
