Hey guys
I have been looking at the eberlestock M5 Team Elk back pack. It has a tubular framed design and is only 3000CI. Ive spent a lot of time looking at it and wearing it at Cabelas it is absolutely what I want and perfect for me except the price $330 OUCH!!
What I am looking for is a day backpack that can haul out 100 lbs of meat and antlers.
Any suggestions for a cheaper alternative?

You get what you pay for....
You can buy a military frame and use a standard pack. You will lose one trip with the day pack but it’s cheaper
Also if you spend that much I would look at some other brands such as mystery ranch or exo. They are a bit lighter. Eberle is a good back but they are a heavy bag

This topic has been discussed on here a few times. I still love my Sitka pack where you absolutely get what you pay for (IMHO)

I pulled the trigger, I actually found it for $245 delivered to my door. I wasnt ready to buy just yet but for $100 off and after looking at the kuiu and others that were way more expensive I was looking that way and was thinking about buying one of those. But now I have another $100 to invest in my next hunting purchase and I am happy with that price. Now Im after a GPS looks like the Garmin 64st is the best one for the money.
Damn it never stops. I always need something for my next trip

Damn it never stops. I always need something for my next trip Save your money and use your phone. Assuming you have a smart phone. Down load a gps app, then save an area, turn your phone on Airplane mode... and boom you are good.

Out in west texas where there is no phone towers? you sure about that bobo? 100%. Your phone has a GPS receiver in it. Off grid you will have to of saved the area maps to use them. They normal are like 10mile by 10 mile block each. Very’s Per gps app and amount of detail Just make sure you turn your phone on to airplane or it will drain your battery quick. Only down side vs stand-alone gps is you have to bring a battery bank to charge instead of batteries. I like dark energy and ankar

The Garmin 64st is a great choice. I replaced my Garmin 60csx with the 64st. Bought two of them when they were on sale at Cabelas for $229.00 each. Their preloaded maps and wireless waypoint transfer feature is outstanding. I get a full season of heavy use from two AA Alkaline Energizer batteries. Just make sure you turn down the backlight, otherwise battery use goes up significantly. Use your red light head lamp to read the screen during night time navigation.

I may have to look in to the phone thing. Im guessing it might be cheaper since I will only have to buy some type of portable charger for the phone.
the backup if I cant figure it out or dont have confidence in it will be the garmin.

I think you’ll find the phone to be very inadequate for battery life if you plan to use it for navigation. My nephew accompanied me on a DIY archery elk hunt in NW Colorado last year. He tried using his iPhone for both communication and navigation but it was usually dead by midday. And that’s with a full charge overnight on our base camp generator.
I’ve always used my phone for communication and my Garmin for navigation.

I bring a phone battery anyway and that lasts me a couple of days even with navagaiton. I buy a custom Topo map as a back up.

I plan on going standby at black gap for mulies if I dont get picked for somethi g good so absolutely no phone service and I was thinking I need both. If the garmin fails I have the phone as backup. So yes I am going to use my phone as a GPS receiver but as backup only. Can't be too careful when you are solo out there. Great info guys !!! Thx

Some of it depends where you are. I am going to the otc elk in Colorado. I can prolly yell enough and find someone  But determine your risks and what you need.

I’ve always used my phone for communication and my Garmin for navigation. I’ve had a completely different experience over last three years. I Turn it on airplane mode, with 30 second screen time out. Mine lasts three days with turning it off at night. Phone is no different then GPS, if you have all functions on your GPS on, it won’t last a Day. Previous Montana 600, Garmin 60stx, and etrex owner.

I use OnX maps off grid on my phone. Like Bobo said, you have to save your areas prior to getting out of service, but it works like a charm.
