I am working up a "soft" load for my 12 year old grandson. He's very slight of build and a bit recoil sensitive. He loves my .270 Win, and doesn't care for the .243 or my tack driving .223 Rem; he claims they just don't feel right to him. So I looked up loads for a 110 grain Hornady VMAX and after several trips up and down "the ladder" with a few different powders and loads, found the sweet spot with 52.6 grains of I4831 set off by Winchester LRP's, Frontier brass, seated to a COL of 3.16. This gave me an MV of 3010 over 10 shots and an ES of 22. Then, just for the heck of it, I tried the same amount of H4831SC, and it came right in. The MV was a tad slower at 2820, and the ES opened up to 27. The biggest change was the POI and the group shape. As you can tell from the pics, the I4831 was tight and right; the H4831 was more left and horizontal stringing. The grandson loves the load, and loves the .270 even more because it doesn't beat him up as much! So if any of you are looking for an easy recoiling load for a friend or family member, you might want to play around this bullet/powder combination. My (well, my grandson's!) .270 has a 22 inch barrel and a 1:10 twist.

Those should work. Glad you found some that hit basically to the same place as well. If that had not reduced recoil enough there is H4895 powder, with it you could probably get velocity down to around 2200fps. Instructions for those super light loads are on Hodgdon's website.

Mikei Follow this LINK for instructions on downloading for cartridges with H4895. Following the instructions for 4895 with a 130 gr bullet you could go as low as 27 grains which would be too slow. 45gr max load X .6=27 That is much lower than the starting load of 42gr listed in the normal loading data. redchevy did a load for his Wife to use his 270 a few years ago and she shoots deer with it.

I'm a big fan of the .270 Win also. One of the best things to ever happen to this fine but old cartridge was the advent of the 6.8mm SPC designed for the AR platform. Hunters wanting to use their AR's for deer has caused the bullet makers to design some excellent lighter weight .277 cal bullets designed to penetrate & expand at lower velocities. I particularly like the Nosler bonded core 100gr & 110gr. To read about 6.8 bullet performance tests check out the link below. To put things in perspective, with a 130gr bullet the .270 Win can max out to 3,100 fps while the max out of a 6.8 SPC is about 2,400 fps. http://68forums.com/forums/showthread.php?33178-6-8-SPC-Bullet-Performance&highlight=xman

On the reduced loads info in the link above do not use that with the 110gr bullets as Hodgdon does not list 4895 as a powder option for that bullet weight. Only use the 4985 reduced loads for bullets where that powder is listed in the regular reloading data.

I load 110 grain Siera prohunters in my 270 win over 36 grains of H4895 for my wife to shoot. Over the past 5 years it has been great on deer and hogs, I have even shot a few with it. Full penetration on everything I have shot even both shoulders, good blood trails, minimal recoil, and its even noticeably quieter than full house loads.
I would recommend giving it a try. It is also very accurate.

Thanks to all you folks who've provided comments, suggestions, and directions! Looks like I'll have a whole lot of options to tinker with, and I'll have my grandson sitting beside me at the reloading bench and have him building some of these different loads himself! The ideal situation will be if builds his own load, tests it and adjusts it for accuracy, and then takes a deer or hog with it! I know that all three of my sons did that very thing, and they still talk about it every Thanksgiving when we have a reunion! The stories get better with age: higher velocity, tighter groups, longer distances, quicker kills, deader deer, but it's all part of the family heritage and folk lore!

I have some 110 Sierras that I played around with several years ago when I was trying to find a load to use for long range, windy varmint hunting. As I recall, I was loading them pretty close to MAX, and the recoil was fairly stout. I'll back down the loadings and see what happens!

On the reduced loads info in the link above do not use that with the 110gr bullets as Hodgdon does not list 4895 as a powder option for that bullet weight. Only use the 4985 reduced loads for bullets where that powder is listed in the regular reloading data. Gotcha, kmon1! I'm a very cautious (cowardly?) reloader, and not much into taking risks with powder combinations I'm not familiar with.

Given their formula, looks like I can safely start at 28.5 (47.5 X .6 = 28.5), so I'll play around with that. Another person posted that he used 36.0 for 110 for his wife's hunting load, and as I work my way up, I'll pay special attention to loads around the 36 grain number. Thanks again!

It's a Stevens Model 200 that I put a StraightJacket treatment on many years ago. It's an absolute beast to carry around, but for some reason, my grandson just loves it. He says, "Grandpa, it just looks mean!" 22 inch barrel, 1:10 twist.
