I'm considering a35 Whelen as my odd ball caliber for any North American game. Any thoughts on this caliber?

If I lived/hunted where Elk, Moose, and big bears lived....I'd already have one! Just don't see the need for it with the animals I typically hunt. Decent ballistics out to 350-400 with 225 accubond and can run 250+ gr bullets for big bears up close. If you think you'll ever hunt Africa for the Big 5, go ahead a get the 375 H&H.

Will work for anything on this side of the pond, and most critters around the world. Like above if the big 5 are on the list get something higger

I have one just because.

It's a nice cartridge and easy to load, for starters. I'm loading a 225-grain Accubond and the rifle likes it, MOA is no trick. I am able to get near 2700 fps using Re15. I think it's enough rifle for anything in North America with this bullet.

I've carried the rifle only for a couple of bear hunts and sat in the blind waiting for hogs a couple of times. I'm confident it will absolutely flatten a big hog...I'm thinking it will be my daytime hog gun this spring.

It's the only caliber to date that I have dropped 3 pigs with one shot with. And ammo is getting easier to find as well.

I have one I have yet to fire a round in. Remington Classic. Plan to elk hunt with it one day.

I don't think it would be ideal for your usage because of the drop at longer ranges and the lack of oomph on brown bear -- I mean it would work but their are better choices, IMO.

The 250 grain loads kick about like .300 WM 150 grain loads.

Of course, realistically, how likely are you to ever shoot a brown bear?

I took a .35 Whelen on my first trip to Africa for plains game, and both my zebra and kudu stopped the .225 grains Barnes TSX, so it isn't a magic caliber.

Have done that twice with its shorter ballistic twin, the 350 Remington Magnum. The elk and deer that have met it never complained about anything. With that rifle am getting 2700 fps with the 225gr partition. Bought that gun to use if I ever go on that Moose hunt. To me bother the Whelen and 350 are 300 yard and in guns but I am fine with that

It'll do what you want.. But do you really NEED anything bigger than a 30-06?

When I went through the one-caliber-for-all-NA-game exercise a few years back, I decided on the .300 WM (or one of the other 30 caliber mags). I still think that is the correct answer.

I agree.

I just like to shoot different calibers from time to time.

FWIW, I think the perfect elk caliber is actually .338 Win Mag.

35 whelen is really a do all cartridge. Its also reloader friendly and can be tamed down easily for recoil sensitive. There is also a plethora of great hunting bullets. I definitely will have at some point a 35 ai in the stall permanently.

For what it's worth, I want an odd ball caliber just to shoot something different. In reality, elk will be the biggest game I ever pursue but I'd like to do it with something different.

I also like cartridges that are different from what most shoot. That is part of what I like about the 350 Rem Mag. Not everyone has one. That 350 has worked well for hogs, whitetails, Mule Deer, coyotes and elk.

I have a 350 Rem Mag also. Great round. Another excellent option to the Whelen is the 9.3X62. I have one of those too in a really nice CZ Mannlicher stocked rifle.

I think a .338-06 or .338-06 AI would be even more oddball -- and better for elk because of the flatter trajectory and higher sectional density with same-weight bullets. What I came away with after using the .35 Whelen in Africa was that the '06 based cartridges don't have enough oomph to push a bullet that diameter deep enough to achieve full penetration on really big animals -- at least consistently.

There's a nice .338-06 for sell on gunbroker right now but they want more than I'm willing to pay:

Hart barreled Win Model 70 .338-06

Everyone and their dog was crazy about the .300 RUM for a while but the fever seems to have cooled off on the round.....

+1 on the 9.3x62...wish I'd never sold my CZ American to a neighbor...but it took him 3 years to talk me into it. Oh Well

+2 on the 9.3
Since the early 1900 it had been taking larger game
But I'm a fan of oddball calibers so if you want a 35 whelen I'm for it!
