Just got my first AR and now needing to stock up on ammo and get started doing some shooting and just want to make sure I make the right choice since there seem to be quite a few out there. Can you guys give me some decent brands that are affordable or ones to stay away from? Initially I'm just looking for .55 grain primarily for just plinking/target shooting. May look at more of a hog round later on. 'Preciate any insight.

I personally don't really like the steel jacketed stuff but I've shot them before and wouldn't necessarily scare me to do so. After that, the next cheapest option to me is the remanufactured stuff from Freedom Munitions. I'd never repaid it because I don't trust the brass but I've never had a dud or failure of and sort.

As for new, "good ammo" there is hornady box of 50 that seems very affordable as well.

What brass does Freedom use, KR? I wouldn't be afraid to reload it if its military brass because it's most likely once fired.

I've heard that they source from everywhere including gun ranges. The range officer from the range near my housd told me they have sold 223/556 and 308 brass to the freedom munitions here in Houston.

I see my local Walmart has the Federal .223 100 rd. value pack 55 gr. for $34.97. Seems like a decent price per round for brass.

Tula, Wolf Polyformance, Monarch, or my reloads are all I shoot.

Academy's Monarch was $7.99 for brass soft point in 55gr. They grouped pretty well in my AR and you can buy 3 boxes for the price of one brand name box

You can reuse brass over and over in most cases.

I have had good luck with those as well.

The ammo snobs will fall off their tall horses to condemn steel case .223 but I've had good luck with TulAmmo. I only used it because one of the only places to shoot near here doesn't allow brass pick up so all I shot was rimfire and steel .223. I was able to hit 8-10" gong from 190 yards 8 times in a row with open sights with Tul. Otherwise I generally load my own.

Pass the gravy.

I hit an 18" plate at 475 repeatedly this week with Monarch steel cased. When I load my own, cost is about 20 cents a round. Steel case runs about 24-27 cents a round. I hate loading the amounts of .223 I shoot, so I've been buying ammo lately.

I'll second the PMC if you want low cost and reliable. I've never had any hiccup with them in 223 or 556.
