I purchased a Lyman 1500 when I started reloading last year. It started out working decent enough but now it really drifts a lot and can range about half a grain. Point me in the direction of a better scale please. I don't like sitting there watching the weight change every second.

I have the RCBS Chargemaster dispenser and scale. Love it, even if it is a bit slow.
One thing I have noticed with my scale is that you really need to have the plastic cover closed while it is dispensing and weighing - this keeps the air from moving around and giving jumpy readings. Make sure you don't have something influencing the scale - moving air or even fluorescent lights can give bad readings on electronic scales.

I have the same scale and had that happen one time. I recalibrated it and had no further problems. I also calibrate before each use as is suggested by Lyman.

I calibrate before each use and sometimes between each load to try to solve the problem. Its becoming very irritating.

If you have a cell phone near the scale, it can cause the scale to misbehave. If you're out in the sticks and get a weak signal from the tower you'll need to keep your phone further away from the scale. I have to keep mine a minimum of six feet or so away from my electronic scales.
That might not be the problem you're having, but it can happen.

Try plugging it in for a while, few hours or so, before you start loading, seems to help mine quite a bit.

For the money and what it does a Chargemaster is the best thing going right now in the scale world.
If you want more accurate than that the budget is limitless...trust me...I'm in the process of getting the +/- .02 grains without drifting. In that realm the GemPro 250 is pretty good but it will drift...I recently bought an AnD F201i or something like that. I posted a great price on it back in December but I haven't loaded with it yet.

Chargemaster.
I asked a bud if I could borrow his for a couple days. He said "nope, if you are thinking about one, get it, you need it." So that's what I did.
50 rounds took 45 minutes to use a thrower 1.0 gr under, then trickle the rest of the way up.
Chargemaster makes 50 rounds take 25 minutes.

Like judd said the best thing going is the chargemaster. If you want better than that it is going to cost a lot of money. There is not much out there sub 1k that is that much better than the CM. If you want the best get a Prometheus gen II, your kids don't need to go to college that bad...

I have the Lyman 1200 DPS unit, which was a bit cheaper than the Chargemaster, and it works fine. If it breaks, I'll get another one. Not going back to throwing/trickling. I'm spoiled now.

If you read the reviews on scales- you can go nuts. Some people use a jewelry scale. I double check against other scales.

Walter...you suck...please don't bring that up...I want one so bad I can't stand it. The speed in which that would increase my production would be insane. But at the cost, I just haven't been able to stomach it....yet

Leave it plugged in and powered on all the time, they are much better when you do that.

I'm sure we could get a few hundred off if we talked to him and packaged 3...are you in? Last I asked for a ball park from someone I knew who had one it was "around 3k". FWIW, he did say he would buy another one in a minute if something happened to that one.

That is the same thing I have heard, around 3k. Also heard the wait was pretty long. I really really want one. Just can't swing it anytime too soon.

$3 grand for a scale? Jeebus.
There really is a point of diminishing returns - I'd say that $3000 to weigh a powder charge to such a degree that you will, even with the absolute best equipment known to man, never notice a variance that the particular scale can read to is somewhere over the horizon beyond the point of diminishing returns.
Hell, the $300 or so on the Chargemaster was enough to make me think long and hard about it before getting one. Glad I did, don't get me wrong, but it's still a fairly hefty price tag for weighing powder.

I know a lot of competition guys that are using Sartorius scales now. Crazy expensive, but at the end of the day if you really do have the requirement of splitting hairs, then you fork over the cash. I've got a Lyman 1200, the first gen. I updated it with the gen II kit which has the improved funnel and powder tube, but it's still started acting twitchy over the last year. Even IF I allow it to warm up etc. Been thinking about putting it on the shelf and picking up one of the newer one piece units like the RCBS or Hornady.

I guess he was sort of saying, where is the return point vs cost. Let's say $3000 extra in the gun, scope, acces. Items, shooter, etc.

Those scales are sure nice and speed up production a lot, but for my $ I will stick with what I have for now. Hornady drop digital scale and an old balance beam. Sure it is a lot slower and the Hornady is not quite as friendly as the chargemaster but not going to argue with getting single digit extreme spreads with some of loads and less than 25 on just about everything.

Walter Sorry, but you simply cannot tell the difference in .05 grains of powder. Even match ammo has a surprisingly large band of charge weights. I'd bet good money that this is simply a case of people spending money A) because they can and B) to more or less brag about it. I don't begrudge anybody that spends that kind of money on a powder scale - it's their money and their choice. But you aren't going to convince me that, with all the variables present between gun, ammo, environmental conditions and - most importantly - human variables, that you are getting your money's worth by measuring your powder to such a degree that you NEED a $3000 scale, or that in doing so there is a discernable difference between Round A with 40.5 grains and Round B with 40.55 grains.
