Guys,
I've never used lupua brass before but have heard GREAT stuff about it. So today when I was at Cabelas I saw a box of 6.5 CM Lupua brass and my curiosity got the best of me and I bought it. When I got home I was curious about the capacity of Lupua vs Hornady and so I filled the lupua brass up and then poured it into the hornady case and I was actually surprised by what the difference was...and yes, I realize my test wasn't perfect but it did allow me an idea of the difference.
So if the capacity is smaller then it seems that the pressure build up will be greater. So what will that do? I am not looking for exact data but just enough that I have an understanding. If my current powder load is H-4350 with 42.0 grams. IF the load was the same what would be the effect? Currently the load produces 2750 fps.
Also with a smaller primer pocket will there be any difference? My thoughts are not really but I'd like to hear from you guys on this.
As for case life...what can I expect? Will the smaller primer pockets be conducive to longer case life?
Any additional info is appreciated!
Thanks,
Mel

All else being equal, decreased case capacity will increase peak pressure and increase velocity.

You may want to get your firing pin bushed to use the small primers for the Lapua brass.

I don't load for the Creedmoor but do like Lapua brass. Here is another discussion from a few months ago about Lapua creedmoor brass. LINK

All else being equal, decreased case capacity will increase peak pressure and increase velocity. I agree^^. 2. Case life will be 10X firings or more, if you regularly anneal the brass. Yes the small rifle primer is for longer case life. Really that's the major advantage. I've got Hornady 6.5 Creedmoor brass with 5X firings. The brass will be done, when the primer pockets get loose. I do not suspect I will ever see a split neck or case head separation.

I have a box of this stuff to neck down for my 22cm. Curious to see how much more I can lean on it.
Are you going to pull those pistols, or whistle Dixie?

I almost got around to it today but ended up sizing and loading 80 rounds of 9.3x74R instead. Probably load it tomorrow night but not sure when I can get around to checking performance.

I figured that you. Of all people, would have already done this.

Yes the small rifle primer is for longer case life. Really that's the major advantage. Here is Lapua's explanation for when they started producing 308 Win brass with a small primer. "Utilizing the well known consistency of the Small Rifle primers to best advantage, this combination has shown significantly reduced velocity spreads and standard deviations compared to .308 Win. cases using the standard large rifle primer. Translating into reduced vertical dispersion, this makes the new Lapua .308 Palma case the choice for long range competition. While testing in the hands of some of the USA’s best long range shooters, all found that use of the small primer reduced the problems of lot to lot variations commonly seen in large rifle primer. Previously, this could only be overcome by very careful testing and selection of specific lots of primers. http://www.lapua.com/upload/news/lapua308winpalmacase2010.pdfHere is their explanation for using it in the 6.5 CM: We’ve also incorporated our smaller diameter flash hole (1.5mm, rather than the industry standard 2.0mm), which has proven to provide enhanced accuracy, and is used in a number of our other accuracy oriented cases. http://www.lapua.com/en/headlines/335/6.5-Creedmoor-is-here!

No argument, that's obviously why some cases went that way. He did ask about brass life of the SR, versus the LR primer. Brass life is a nice side effect.
