Depends on what you're shooting it out of. If you're shooting an AK or cheap AR then steel is ok. If you have a high-dollar AR then probably stick to brass.

For me it's Federal Fusion MSR ammo for hunting and for target/plinking I use Federal or PMC FMJ.

Cheap steel cased stuff, or handloads.

Everything else is handloads for LR accuracy

Hand loads.
But seriously, there are about a thousand different 223 ammo types to choose from. What are you shooting at?

I like xm193 FMJ for the range. It shoots pretty well for me. For hunting ammo, you're on your own. It will be hard to find and expensive. I hand load 60gr Partitions for hunting, but rarely use the 223 for hunting.

What's wrong with lacquer? The InterWebZ says it ruins your barrel.
Pass the gravy.

Speer Gold Dot if you can get the LE hookup. Very accurate, for what it is, & top shelf for blind barrier rounds in a 223/556.

My understanding is the lacquer can melt in a hot chamber causing feed/extraction issues. Sounds reasonable but I have no direct experience with it and don't intend to try...just not enough savings for me.
I was wrong...on anything technical. Fitz............. is right, ya know............

If I run into any of these issues, I will certainly let y'all know.
