when you load by the ogive do you have to reset your dies every round?
last night I was setting my rounds by the ogive 300 win mag with 230 bergers and it seemed as once I got it dialed in and set then next would be off and would have to re set the die. is this normal?

I have never run into the problem you describe. I always load to the ogive and primarily use Sierra bullets and Lee dies. You might want to measure your bullets and see if the ogive varies from bullet to bullet. There could also be an issue with your die. I am not sure what to tell you on this one.

You might being the 230 is pretty long. If the bullets are consistent, which bergers usually are, it could be your variable.

Yeah that's one version. They used to offer one for the regular die as well just swap it out.

Forgive me for asking as this may be a stupid question, but once you seat the bullet are you measuring OAL to the bullet tip, or to the ogive?

Ok. I load using what sounds like the same procedure and equipment, though I load as Geezer does with primarily Sierra bullets (periodically with Hornady and Speer) and Lee dies and measure with the same Hornady bullet comparator. I've not once had an issue so all I can think of is a die discrepancy of some kind. I'd measure all the bullets to the ogive before loading and make sure they were all the same measurement then proceed with seating then measure OAL to the ogive to compare for any variance in length. The only other thing I can think of would be an issue with your calipers.

Yes. The cost is right and the quality is good enough for what I do. One thing I remember about Lee dies is that they have a floating bullet seater that is cupped to better fit the shape of the bullet. Your problem may be that seating die is pushing the bullet from the end of the bullet rather than farther down on the ogive. As no two bullets are the exactly the same length, .001 to .004 difference, that could be your problem if the die is pushing from the end of the bullet rather than from the ogive.

Have had that same issue with older dies when loading VLD bullets.
