Hey all.
How does your hunting change if you're bow hunting from the ground versus in a tree? I can't afford a tree stand this year, but I plan on getting out with my bow on some public land.
Thanks for your input!

My hunting changes drastically! 1. Its much more difficult to be detected if elevated. 2. Shot angle changes. I prefer the downward angle for a good blood trail. 3. I HATE sitting on the ground! I can not be still. If im elevated I'm more relaxed.
Im in a similar situation and I've decided to build an elevator and put a pop up on it. If you cant purchase a popup or a tripod I would scout your spot, find a good place and build a brush blind. Just winging it will 100% effect your hunt in a bad way.

Get a pop up blind and brush it in. It's the most instant and versital way to hunt. I like the fold the floor out and pile dirt around the whole blind. It seals the floor. Keeps critters out. Help keeps scent in.
Usually I use if to hunt a wind I'm not set up for. In this case I just set up in the best cover.
You can get a pop up for under a hundred bucks if you ship around.
You'll get your money's worth if you hunt pubic land.

Popup is the way to go. Had to give up tree/ladder stands for several years and popups are hard to beat. They keep your scent from wiffing around, and you can stand up, move around to get the blood flowing, and sit in a comfortable chair and out of the weather. For bow hunting make sure you get one of the larger blinds that allows you room to draw your bow. You can also setup a ground blind using natural materials, just make sure to set up in the shadows with brush behind you to breakup your outline. Finding a pinch point on a trail with wind direction in mind will help you score. Try to stay out of the thick woods as the swirling winds work against you. An ideal area is on the edge of a fire break, clear cut, pipeline or clearing where winds run in one direction.

Thanks for your input! If you can't afford a tree stand, you sure won't be able to get a pop up. On the other hand, if you shop around, you can pick up a lock on pretty cheap. Some under $40.

I mostly hunted a tree stand up until the last two days of last year in the rain. They both have pros and cons. I like the tree for being able to see more. I like the blind for the elements and being ground level with the animals is a whole different experience.

Thanks for your input! Biggest change for me is what I can and can't see. With a pop-up, in most areas, you are going to be much more limited on visibility. Next would be what I can and can't hear. I feel like I lose some of the use of my senses when I am in a ground blind. With that said, I hunt out of ground blind relatively often and it definitely has its pros.

I use pop ups by necessity. Don't have trees tall enough for stands.
The key is to brush them in good against a shaded thick background if possible. If you see possible trails that would have the deer coming up behind you block those off with brush.
If the wind is not right don't hunt it until it is.

Thanks for the information guys. And I was referring to light weight tree stands to hike into a location. Pop ups look like a better bet but yes, still pushing my budget! I want something that is good quality that will last, not necessarily the cheapest. . .
So the $50 blinds concern me, whether tree stand or pop up, which is why I was going to wait a year and get a better quality tree stand.

Not sure about the rules where you hunt, but couldn't you build a brush blind? Beats sitting on the couch.

Where I was turkey hunting last year I saw about a dozen brush blinds, so it's definitely done, but I need to look up the legality of it.
