This should make it interesting. I'm sure it will help the live oak crop in San Saba county and on our new ranch in Jones county the white oaks and shinnery are already loaded up with acorns. Going to be plenty of feed for them. Hopefully the acorns will wait to drop until after the first week or so of season.

We had no acorns last year so I'm expecting a bumper crop this year. I plan on hunting feeders a whole lot less this year.

We have a good hog crop so hopefully dropping acorns won't last as long as they did a couple years ago. On the new place I have no idea. We are just now getting the cabin set up and things in place. I doubt it will really be set up for hunting until next year although we will have a couple of feeders and stands in place soon.

When you guys have a good white oak tree or other acorn crop tree how far away do you set up on it? Do you hunt the tree or the travel paths or both, depending?
I found a white oak tree on my place and was thinking about hunting it some this year
Adult late onset hunter. Why did I wait so long to get started?

Being in the tree they are feeding under can make for a tough shot. I will usually try to sit a tree or tripod down wind and often they will just circle the trees that are dropping and you have time to study the deer before the shot.

Nice and green at our place. Feeder activity is still existent, but slow. Deer wise but the hogs were tearing it up. Slick Tricked a nice sow this am.

I miss looking at the trees in San Saba, but got on a new lease in Val Verde this year and wont miss the acorns. Should be good late season hunting at feeders for yall that have tons of acorns.

Ground is pretty green for August, this year. I'm seeing a few trees loaded with acorns and putting two new stands in location this week to try to hunt under them. I put fertilizer under some of them back in late February and they are loaded up now.

That's funny. I thought I might be the only one to fertilize the oaks. I like to fertilize several clumps in my area and place a few stands for when they start dropping. Makes for some fun, non feeder set ups. Or should I say "natural" feeder setups?

Y'all aren't the only ones to fertilize oaks, have been doing that since before moving to Texas over 30 years ago.

Skeeters are my only concern at this point. Going to be bad from what I see now.
Sometimes it's hard being me! But somebody has to do it.

I'm right there with you with all this Zika mess lately. I'm going to switch to this new beard oil/balm that has citronella in it. Hopefully it doesn't mess anything up....

Y'all aren't the only ones to fertilize oaks, have been doing that since before moving to Texas over 30 years ago. My dad pointed out how many acons were on the trees on the edges and inside of our fertilized pastures. So I just found a few to go around with some fertilizer. I think time release or organic seems to work best for me. I tried some fertilizer from the Kitchen Pride mushoom farm and it worked well. The poultry litter did ok but it can be a bit too hot.

I have just used 13-13-13 which has worked well in Mississippi and Texas.

I do the ones around my feeder as that is where your stuck hunting on a lease. I don't know how I'm going to handle it on this property we bought. It's all white oaks and oak scrub. It's loaded with acorns this year though. Huge ones.

Definitely like the thermacell. I also wear my leafy suit and a mesh face mask early season to help with the mosquitos.
So many acorns where I hunt the feeding patterns are very unpredictable.

Not many oaks where I hunt, just a few.
I did notice yesterday at the house that some acorns had already fell. I thought it was early but with the amount that are on the trees at my house, Im not sure how the limbs are still hanging.
I avoid Dick's and hope they fold.

Red oaks are dropping already. Live and pin oaks will in early October.
