I've shot compound bows and feel that I'm pretty accurate and somewhat comfortable using them. I've got a shoulder that acts up a lot so bow hunting could be a challenge at times. I've considered a crossbow but know absolutely nothing about them. What's the good and the bad of either. Either way I've got to go buy something this year just trying to decide on the plan of action.

I gave up compounds due to back/neck issues. Bought a crossbow and find it a lot of fum. They are louder, more difficult to draw back/load, heavier and bulkier than a vertical. They DO NOT stretch your killing yardage to any great degree.
Since they are cocked and loaded, there can be less movement to prepare a shot. Most have scopes with multiple aiming points which can make shots more accurate if you have a good rest - don't plan on a second shot if you miss.
My biggest complaint, if it is one, is that practice gets a little less fun due to having to [censored] and load so much. Drawing a vertical is quicker and easier. I did shoot a doe this past season at 22 yards, and she was down in under 40 yards.I am very happy overall with a crossbow and really can't understand what all the hate is about out there. They are a tool that used properly gives a person options that might not be available otherwise.

Never shot a crossbow so I have no info on them. I have heard though, as jhenderson said, that they can be a pain in the rear to [censored]. If the bad shoulder is your lead arm maybe a lighter compound, or if it's your draw arm, maybe a little lower draw weight? I'm not a huge bow guy, but I am getting back into it this year myself.
