So bought my crossbow and took it out to a 3D range over the weekend. Started it out at 10 yards. First bolt shoots way up in the air, probably about 2 feet above the target and lands on the wall, even though i had a shot shot through my scope. Second one goes into the target, and the third one is about 6 inches above target and also travels to the wall. It's my first time using any kind of bow. Would these very high shots just be a case of me not making sure the bolt was straight enough on the rail and locked in all the way? I did take about 10 more shots and they all hit the target. Some of those were from 20 yards away but those first couple of out of control shots really scared me. I'm taking it hunting soon and do not want a wild shot to happen again. Any advice would be great.

That's what I was thinking. But it is brand new out of the box. Just didn't know.

Taking a crossbow on a hunt without adequate time shooting it is absolutely rediculous wrong. The fact you haven't a clue why it's shooting the way it is or the ability to diagnose the issue makes it more so.

You, sir, are an accident waiting to happen. And it will happen. Sooner. Or later.

$20 bucks on the thumb. Any takers?

I get it. You're the type that would give a firearm to someone who has no experience shooting it or familiarity with how it functions. Good for you.

Ask the bow techs at the Allen Cabelas how many accidents they've had with folks test driving crossbows.

Yea, I'll feel much better. When unskilled or marginally skilled folks take the time to actually learn what the heck they're doing BEFORE they go hunting. And asking questions like the fella making the post is a good way to learn.

My facts are based on incidents reported to the federal consumer product safety commission and a civil complaint and discovery product Incidental to seeing someone with quite a few years of archery experience take the end of his thumb off.

Cabelas was referenced as an easy to verify resource. But it's happened at big box retailers, pro shops, and in the field.

Jhog, definitly something wrong with your crossbow. I am not familiar enough with crossbows to tell you how to correct the problem.

I would take it into an actual bow shop and have them look at it. Also, see if they will give you a tutorial on how to use it and on how to address certain issues that might come up while in the field.

Practice, practice, practice. Know your limits and don't stretch beyond them. Pick a spot, aim small miss small. Shot placement with any archery equipment is critical.

Good luck on your hunt and get to a shop as soon as possible to see if they can correct your issue up

Well, don't let this jack@$$ get you down. If you don't have any experience with your equipment, I agree/suggest that you should go to a shop and have them look at it and give you some instruction on how to use it. After that, practice. Alot. We all have to start somewhere. I mean, how else are you going to learn?

Thanks for the advice guys. Most of you were very helpful. I am going to practice much more before taking it out like always. I am all about safety first, am a seasoned hunter with many animals under my belt, but am just getting into archery. I will for sure take it back to Dicks were I bought it originally a couple months ago and have them look at it. Maybe it's me that did something wrong but like I said most of my shots were right on.

Just so you know it's thumbs down with a crossbow so I'll just say that's prolly a good decision.

Unless you get lucky there is a less than good chance that the sales guy or gal at Dick's will be very knowledgeable. As has been recommended take it to an archery specific shop that deals in crossbows, that's what they do, they don't sell golf equipment on Monday and hunting equipment on Thursday. Good Luck

Could be something with the bolts. If they are carbon bolts, grab the tips and put a small bend in them while carefully listening for any odd sounds. Also look to see if any of the fibers are starting to crack/fray. If so, throw away those bolts because you don't want a bolt coming apart on you when you shoot it. You should do this with each bolt and do so periodically depending on how much you shoot. If you hit another arrow in your target, you should check out both bolts using the same methods. And never leave them in your targets outside between shoots. You can also mark any flyers on the vanes to see if it's just that bolt. If so, throw it away for safety reasons.

Check your string often for wear and take to a reputable shop until you get comfortable with knowing your equipment. Keep practicing often - I find that pigs make excellent practice targets.

I might add that you should wear some eye protection until you get this issue figured out. Safety First!!!

Thank you for the advice I will for sure check my bolts as you said "High Country Archer"

I am shooting a Carbon Express CX-1 Covert. Using Carbon Express Maxima and Pile Driver bolts. The first bolt i pulled out of my case though is a bloodring that I bought at Bass Pro. That' the arrow that went crazy on me. All are 20 Inch, using 100 grain practice tips.

Some cross bows are so powerful that the original nocks on your bolts wont work. They make a special insert for a nock replacement that may help this problem go away. Its flat and has small grip dots on it. My friend had the same problem. You may check into that. He had a 900 dollar 10 point crossbow. up

He said that the string was trying to drive through the insert and go into the bolt, and the flat one stopped that and gave him a more equalized string to nock connection.

My guess is you did not have the bolt seated all the way back against the string. I had it happened once when I have been practicing with my x-bow causing what was similar to a dry-fire. If you do not have the bolt seated all the way back it will or can cause some damage to you x-bow over time with a compound style x-bow. I bought an Excalibur so I would not have to worry as much about anything I did wrong when first starting. I just got in a hurry and not paying attention that one time. Won't happen again for me. I would put in as much practice time as you can and pay attention to what you are doing on the shots that hit where you want them to. What type of x-bow and bolts do you have? The bolts I bought are made by Excalibur. Did you wax and lube the string and x-bow before starting?

This is true if the string slaps the bolt instead of pushing it from the start it can make the bolt shoot high, or even dry fire because the string may go under or over the bolt when its too far forward.

Are you utilizing some sort of cocking device or pulling it back by hand? This can make a big difference.
