On one of my R700 rifles the bolt sometimes doesn't kick the shell out when I pull it back. It just pulls the shell back and then it sits in the magwell. Anybody know why?

Ejector spring would be my guess. Google ejector spring removal Rem 700...a 1/16" punch, it's relatively easy procedure.

Yes. Generally, one of 2 reasons.

1- the extractor doesn't hold onto the case long enough, and it releases the case right before it gets to the action opening. If the bolt is dropping the case, then the claw part needs to be adjusted, or the ejector plunger spring is not pushing hard enough. Most of the time it's the claw part that has the issue.

2- Try working the bolt faster. A lot of shooters slowly "baby" the bolt to the rear and the the case does not have enough mechanical force to kick out.

If # 2 is not the case, look at #1.

What action is it (factory Rem 700, or custom Rem 700 action)? I have had this same problem with a certain action mfg with this issue.

Man, you guys are awesome. I'll get a new spring.

Chad, it's a factory 700. What do you mean by "claw"?

I shot a couple rounds of steel ammo through this gun and one time had to use a little extra force to close the bolt....could I have bent something or damaged something?

If you look at the image below, you can see the Rem 700 bolt face. The ejector plunger is on the right hand side of the bolt face in the picture. At about the 7 o'clock position on the bolt face, you can see the ejector "claw". This is what holds on to the rim of the case and ejects the fired round. If you shot steel cased ammo and had to force the round in, yes, it could cause an issue. The claw is also steel and with steel cased ammo, the weakest link will give. The claw extractor can get damaged. Take a look at it and see if you can visually see any deformation or wearing on it. It's going to be the claw or the ejector plunger. Oh, and don't shoot any steel cased ammo through it! I cringe at those things. It's just very low end and cheap ammo that's very dirty, and sometimes over pressure.

Also, I have seen a guy blow up a rifle at a gun range shooting steel cased ammo through a 308. The steel cased ammo does not show pressure signs like normal brass cased ammo does. Brass will release pressure through the primer and case head area where steel cased ammo will not. That creates more pressure on the action and bolt where the rifle takes more abuse. So it's hard to read pressure signs with steel cased ammo until it's often too late.

If you have some pressure issues with this ammo, it can damage the ejector plunger also. I have seen some competition rifles run some hot ammo through their rifles (because it shot so good!) and the ejector plunger stop working to eject cases out. The higher pressure ammo puts more pressure on the ejector and spring, which wears out. These shooters would manually remove each fired case from the bolt, which slows them down. It's known to happen.
