Ok I have been looking for a while and decided to pull the trigger and get a new mountain rifle. I am going to get it in either a 25-06 or 280 Rem. Any thoughts on either caliber? I plan on using the rifle as true mountain rifle for well .......mountain hunts! I plan on using it for sheep and goats but may carry in on wilderness deer/elk hunts that require a lot of hiking. I am thinking the 280 would be a better choice for elk sized critters maybe even a bear, but the 25-06 should have more manageable recoil and more choices and accesibilty of ammunition. The balistics I looked up show both pretty similar with the 25-06 being a little flatter.

Although I would go 28 nobler myself . The rifle I am buying does not come in 28 Nosler. So that is not really an option.

There is really no comparison. The 280 wins hands down. Coupled with the proper projectile for the game hunted it will cleanly take anything in North America.

The 280 would be more versatile with the heavier bullets. I've never shot a 280, but how bad can the recoil be? I can't imagine that it's much different than a 270 and 270 isn't bad at all. I think the 280 would would be one of the better mountain rifle rounds.

I think gusick hit the nail on the head. The .280 is just more cartridge than the .25-06 is.

Love the 25-06 but for your application its a easy answer...280 all the way. Put on a muzzle break if you think the recoil would be more than you could tolerate. Its really a great caliber if you reload.

I'll play the spoiler here. 25-06 with 100 or 120g Green Box you'll be fine.

25/06 for deer-sized critters. Throw elk in the mix and the 280 wins.

Maybe so...but don't you think the .280 would be better?

I love my 25-06 and have shot lots of deer with it, never been elk hunting but I here lots of controversy over using a .270, so my choice is simple, .25 for deer and a .280 for elk.

The 25-06 only wishes it could do what the 280 can.

I don't know mine drives nails at 100 yards, but I know my rifle and it's limitations or rather mine, but at under 150 yds. on hogs I am not opposed to taking an ear shot. I will be the first to admit when you start talking elk and bear I lose that warm and fuzzy feeling, simply because I have never hunted them.

I love the 25-06 myself but for Elk this is a no brainer. 280 all day everyday.
Don't listen to people who tell you the 25-06 is plenty for Elk. Will it kill an Elk with a perfect shot..... yes it will but it will injure more than it will kill. Many many different rounds better suited for Elk hunting.

Many many different rounds better suited for Elk hunting. You should be making perfect shots whenever possible. It's personal opinion, but I don't think it's hard to wait for a broadside or quartering target. Unless you're shooting over 300 yards, I wouldn't really worry about using a .25-06 with a good bullet on elk. If you want to shoot through shoulders, etc. then go .280. The .280 will do everything the .25-06 will and probably do it at a higher level.

I do. Sure, but if we're gonna' play that game why not just bite the bullet and go .30-06? Or just skip that and go straight to .300 Win Mag?

Just saying, if inconsistent shot placement is the reason to not be shooting a lighter caliber the bullet is the last of my worries.
Even a .280 is going to need to be put in the right spot.

I'd split the difference and get a 270.
