Ive decided that I am turning my AR556 in to an AR68. Keeping my lower and just buying or building an upper. I have already decided on 16 inch barrel and the cartridge. But everything else is up in the air. Yes I know about 68forums but this is the THF forum and we need to talk about it over here also since it is good hunting cartidge

I personally dont want to build it or buy the tools but thought about assembling the components and bringing it to someone to build for me. The 2 most important factors to me are a quality barrel and a nice handguard. Everything else is up in the air.

I have been checking out Bison Armory and they have some decent uppers for under $800 w/ BCG or is it cheaper to buy/assemble the components and have someone build for me?

The magazines I have seen look crappy. Who makes the best or highest quality 68 mag? Who makes quality 68 barrels?

PRI mags are the best quality but not cheap

I love my ARP 16 in barrel and seekins precision 15 in lightweight mlok handguard.

My gun will shoot steel at 500 all day.

If you want to step up to high end stuff look at a complete upper from Wilson Combat

I am definitely thinking a wilson combat barrel to start if I assemble my own but I am just assuming they are quality from the name.

Pitchfork Predator on here has a Wilson combat upper he paired with a lower I built for him and it shoots lights out and he has taken it to 700 yds with 130SSTs

Get with Eric at Blackstone Arms. He's a member here, "hdfireman", and assembles his uppers with ARP barrels and Superbolts. I have a 12.5 he built that shoots sub-MOA with factory ammo and my own reloads.

I'm using a 16" ARP barrel and ASC 17rd magazines.
For the handguard I went with a Troy VTAC Alpha, very nice. One thing on using a metal handguard is they get cold in the winter and suck the heat out of your hand without insulated gloves. I've thought more than once of switching to a carbon fiber handguard.

The 6.8 is the best thing ever happened to the AR platform. I use 120gr Hornady SSTs in it which is just devastating on pig population. Just love it!!

Thats my main purpose for switching my 556 to 68 because it is my dedicated pig hunting weapon and I am afraid that a 300 lb pig is not going to go down with a 556. Yes I know perfect shot placement but in the real world that isnt always possible when you are stalking and not hunting form a blind. I solo hunt/stalk in the nat forest and sometimes you can get quite close to them so I have been reading and doing my homework and no doubt that anything 200 yards and under this is the perfect AR hunting round

I was discouraged to see that Midway only had 11 types of ammo in stock at this time.

I just put my AImpoint Micro T1 up for sale on another site because I am thinking the Strike Eagle is the way to go.

With the presidential election so close I figure I better get this done now before prices go through the roof. If Hillary is elected I see prices going up at least 25% if not more. I will hold on to my 556 ammo and upper to sell when that happens.

I have spent a TON of time in the woods with the 6.8 over the last few years. So much so that it has become one of my favorite calibers. If I were to ever build a custom bolt gun it would either be a 300 Win Mag or a 6.8. Obviously to very different rounds but I share the same love for each.

On the barrel I would look at ARP. Harrison not only sells the bare barrels so you can build yourself but I know he use to also build complete uppers as well. I assume he still does both. Quality is top notch!!!

For mags PRI is considered the best but I have had great luck with ASC and AR Stoner. I am about 99.99% sure that the AR Stoners are just rebranded ASC mags marketed by Midway. The 10 round mag is by far the best choice for hunting in my opinion. The most shots I have ever fired in one hunt is 4 so there is really little chance of running out of ammo unless you are the spray and pray type that keeps shooting as long as you can still see the animal.

Hand gaurds become more personal preference. Lots of quality stuff out there. If you are into quad rail types the Larue is hard to beat. I always thought I liked Yankee Hill (and I still do) but the first time I handled a Larue you could tell it was on a whole new level.

For ammo: I have found the Accubond to be unbeatable. Just about every load I have shot has been accurate but the Accubond produces results that will make you think you are shooting something much bigger than the 6.8.

Im afraid to get in to the build thing because I dont want to put it together and it somehow shoots backwards or sideways if it shoots at all. LOL However if I could get higher quality components for the same price as a buying a complete upper then it is worth it to build.

I would love a Wilson or Noveske but they are out of my price range. I am thinking $800-900 max since I can order one today for that price from Bison. No reason to spend more than that.

Any other companies that sell completes I should be looking at?

PRI mags are high dollar but if they are quality then they are worth it. Too bad Lancer doesnt make 6.8s yet.

I have a Rock River Arms Coyote Carbine 16" 6.8 complete upper. It was ~$650 new two years ago. It shoots.

I just built a 6.8 using bcm parts and an arp barrel and bolt. The bcm kmr hang guard is excellent. I haven't even shot it yet

You can also get a noveske barrel and gas block combo for not much more but I don't think it will shoot much better than arp

I would recommend Eric as well-he built a 16" SOCOM ARP-barreled upper with a Superbolt for me. Haven't sighted it in yet but it runs well. Great customer service and uses quality components.

I've got a 16" ARP. Went with a Daniel Defense bolt because ARP didn't have any when I put it together. Went with a Lancer handguard. I couldn't be any happier. It shoots 95gr TTSX's very well. Pigs hate it.

Thanks for the praise guys!

Bigfoot,
Great choice in caliber to start. As some have already said the 6.8 in my opinion is the best hunting caliber in the AR-15. Wilson Combat and Bison are good choices but for a 6.8 I say AR Performance is where it's at. They have spent a lot of time and energy in finding what works best and they are priced right. I only use ARP barrels and the superbolt in all my builds. Give me a call and we can talk about what you're wanting. Thanks for the interest!

The 6.8 is the #1 choice for hunting deer and hogs in an AR15

I have a Wilson combat upper and I built my own with ARP barrel and bolt. They both shoot very well. I agree with Eric. ARP is the way to go!

I have a PSA 6.8 upper with an FN CHF barrel that has proven to be very accurate and reliable. It's my go to for hog hunting at night.
I have PRI and Barrett mags and have had no issues with either. If you are going to handload and go for a heavy bullet seated to a long OAL, PRI is the only way to go. I stuff my 140 gr Berger VLD loads in them and they feed fine.

Good info guys. I am trying to sell my Aimpoint T1 and Magnifier and as soon as they sell it looks like I will be calling Eric to see if he has an upper for me. I like his price because it comes with a nice BCG and ARP barrel which everyone seems to like. He is also in Texas so keep that money here!

What is it like finding 68 ammo at places like Walmart or Academy since I have never looked? Do they have it or will I need to order from online sites?

I have a RRA 6.8 16" rifle. The thing plain shoots. Looking at getting a RRA upper 6.8 for a lower I already have. Going to put it together for the daughter.

Academy usually has 2 or 3 loads to choose from. AE FMJ is one I think as well as Hornady and they use to carry Remington also but my store closed them out earlier this year so not sure if all Academys did that or not.

My Wallymart does not sell 6.8. They did have some Fusion 6.8 for a very short period of time a couple of years ago but they never got anymore in after that.

This Will be a 11.3" 6.8 if my stamp ever comes in. I was hoping for deer season but not too confident now.
(not a 6.8 mag)

110 Accubond has left everything else I have tried in the dust!! Been shooting them for several years now and have zero complaints on both pigs and deer. Have had several two with one shot hunts with the Accubond as well. You can usually run them through both shoulders of hogs up to 200 pounds and still get a exit and no need to trail them. The Accubond below was dug out of the opposite shoulder of a very large boar. To this date it is the only Accubond I have ever recovered from any animal from any caliber.
