....and you wanted to go pick up a sporting type rifle, what brand & model would you go with? AR, DPMS, Smith & Wesson, Ruger? I'm pretty sure that I'm going with the 5.56 but I don't need the "Ferrari" edition or the "Gremlin" either. I'm just looking for a rifle that is built like a bank vault, easy to maintain, shoots & cycles well and has room for add on's to advance the capabilities of the platform.

When I was in a similar situation, Ibought a Colt 6920 with magpul furniture and topped it with a leupold Firedot scope

Just depends on how much cash you had laying around. I'd skip a base dpms, maybe a s&w sport 2 and have heard good things about the ruger.

My son is in college so has to pay me back - hence got him a Ruger as a good but economic choice. Me, mine are almost all Colt.

If the prices don't go crazy, the S&W models are proven and affordable.

There are also build options from companies like Palmetto State and many others.

Having experience with DPMS, I just can't knock them. Perhaps the Toyota Corolla of the class, but I don't see a lot of Toyota cars broken down.

Considering this particular platform is the most popular Sporting Rifle in the U.S.A.; most downsides or problems can be rectified with a very little output on after-market parts and some research.

Middle of the road, probably a Colt 6920. Good quality for low price probably windham. Little bit better than colt for not much more, Daniel Defense or LMT.

I'd buy another DPMS with a heavy stainless barrel. I've got a 223 with 20" bull barrel that shoots sub 1/2" with off the shelf Hornady Superformance 53gr vmax. It's been through hell and never let me down.

Dpms or a JP. For something between those two, a RRA.

I've got the DPMS in AR-10 platform in 6.5 Creedmoor and it has been outstanding! It will shoot 5 round groups at 100 yards less than an inch, the best being less than a half inch. I've hit out to 800 yards with it! For the money it has been well worth it!

My 20" Hbar .223 will shoot 1" very regularly. I've shot 1.5" at 200 yards several times with it. I hope the 16" .308 I just bought will hold up to that expectation!

I've had great luck with DPMS rifles and don't understand the disapproval they receive from so many folks.

I would have to go with the smith and a 6.8 cal.

Cheap end, S&W or Ruger AR556

Middle ground, RRA or Colt

Upper end, Daniel Defense

Top End, Wilson Combat

My next black gun will either be a .300 SBR or something on the AR-10 platform. I like what FJG did with that DPMS and I like the .308.

Yep.... If your gonna hunt hogs and deer with it I would highly recommend this caliber.

You could easily add a 556 or many other caliber uppers to it if you want to. Not the case with the AR10 platform.

Love my SR 556 piston rifle. Compact, accurate and reliable.
Also love My Tikkas and Brownings. Never had or fired a Ruger Amercan rifle, but reports I've heard have been positive for accuracy, value and dependability for the most part.

I totally agree. I have several DPMS and all are good shooters with no problems.

I would 2nd the 6.8 for hunting purposes...much more effective than 223/556 for hog size critters.

Same here, I've had a 20" A2 config. DPMS A-15 in 5.56 for more years than I care to remember. Not a single issue ever. Very accurate and dependable rifle. cheers
