Hi everyone,
I just picked up a McMillan stock that's basically unpainted. I've never painted a stock before, so I wanted to tap into the forum's experience on the subject. What's the best type of paint to use? Any hints or tips?
Inquiring minds want to know.

Clean with acetone. Apply Krylon primer Apply Krylon paint to suite you. When you like the colors apply matte finish clear coat.
Rustoleum will work, but it takes longer to dry than Krylon. If you are layering different colors, it can turn into an all day project and two days drying. Plus Rustoleum has a nozzls problem..A can near full of paint and none will come out.

Don't ruin it with spray paint if it's a premium stock. Save the spray paint for the crappy factory plastics and savages.
Look around and there are some good cerakoters out there.

I used Krylon Fusion on a few rifles. It's held up very well, it's all in the prep.

Krylon, but lay down a base of primer for better durability.
Try practicing on a 2x4 first.
Also, spray lightly, and let each layer dry thoroughly before going to the next to avoid drips.

Shoot, that looks alright! Look up the "sponge camo technique". It is a fast procedure and the end results look cool, and make for great camo. Also, if you ever decide to paint the barreled action and one day you want the paint job to go away, an old bath towel and a can of acetone will remove all the paint with a little scrubbing.

Thanks guys. My first camo job. The OD is the base coat and it is Fusion. Next layer was Averoe Field Drab with a final coat of Averoe light coyote. Used painters tape to layer the shapes.

I did one with stone texture paint They key to any kind of paint job is prep work and thin even coats. A couple tricks to get rattle cans to spray their best is make sure the can is warm. If its cold out, you can put the can in a warm water bath. Second, always clear the nozzle. After you shake it up real good, turn it upside down and spray til nothing but air comes out. Do this every time you start/stop spraying and you wont get spatter or clogged tips near as much. Spray cans will never be as good as real painting stuff, but they can be quite nice and durable if you take your time and do it right. Different brands of rattle cans and different models of each brand have varied formulations, so you need to read the can on drying times and recoat windows.

Painted with stone textured Krylon. Good primer coat to start after a good cleaning then color or colors of choice and two or three coats of clear should hold up well.

That really looks good Scott, tell us about your Savage, pretty cool looking It's the new Stainless Lightweight Hunter in 308. I've only had it about 60 days and only been to the range once. Burned most of my reloads getting it on paper but luckily I brought some reloads another rifle liked and was able to get it sighted in with that ammo. Picked it up for $599. Plan on it being a mountain rifle. Weighs 5.5 lbs without scope. It's wearing a Weaver Grand Slam tactical 3-10 I already had. It will probably stay on it. I added a tactical bolt handle to get a better grip. The other one was smaller than I was used too. This one is bigger than I'm used too but it's very easy to grip. This is the final 3 shot group at 100 yards once I made my final adjustments.

I have mostly Ruger 77s and several have McMillan stocks. This is my 2nd Savage. I was a little worried about the pencil barrel and flimsy stock. I never expected it shoot that well. I'd like to do a free range Aoudad hunt next year in the Davis mountains so I wanted something light and something I wouldn't mind getting scratched and dinged up.
