so to my understanding an 18.5" barrel with pistol grip is a little over 27" long. is this legal or not. do I need a permit to have this or not. ive heard several diff. things.

I purchased the barrel it has a bead on it. and puchased the pistol grip. to put on the gun I already have. if it makes any diff. nothing has been mod. or changed. just diff. barrel and stock

It is consider a "sawed off" if it has a barrel less than 18" and/or a total length less than 26". Be sure to check the actual law though, because That is from memory and could be wrong.

Should be fine if OAL is 27". Mossberg makes a 14.5" barreled pistol grip 500 that can be had with a birdhead grip. It's 26.5" OAL and doesn't require a stamp. Considered a "firearm" not a shotgun since it never had a butt stock on it.

Your combination is fine. To be a legal shotgun the barrel must be 18" or longer AND the overall length has to be 26" or longer. Less on either dimension is a NFA SBS.
The mention of the 14.5" version as "firearm" above is legal at federal level only if the gun came from factory with a pistol grip and never had a buttstock installed.
