I am replacing an A2 Stock with a Magpul STR Carbine stock but need to decide if I go with a Mil Spec or Commercial Buffer Tube, which is better and why? Also, what are the best springs and buffers for optimum reliability?
Thanks in advance for the advice.
I was wrong...on anything technical. Fitz............. is right, ya know............

The tubes performance wise are the same just the commercial has a little bigger circumference. Springs and buffers depend on gas system and caliber. I like the spikes H2 buffer for 223, but the regular carbine buffers run fine on 16" barreled 223's when you get into SBR's and pistols that's when you might have to toy with the gas system and buffer system. Most springs are all the same, some claim lighter and silent operation, but the regular springs work fine.
If you're talking about LR308/AR10 systems it's a whole other can of worms.

Commercial has the grooves cut into it or pressed into it and the Mil Spec are on the "outside " of the tube so the idea is that it reduces the chance that when you stress the tube you break it off at the threads. There are several charts that show the optimum injection pattern which is something like 3 o'clock but it can run well between 2 o'clock and 5 o'clock as you face forward. So it's not only reliability it's having your system set up so it's optimum to the gas for that load that you use. I agree with the buffer, I like the H2. I run Tubbs flat springs with about a coil cut off.
