I found one today that's new for $699. That seems like a very good price for that rifle. I've been looking at different ways to get a lightweight hunting rifle (thought I was getting a Kimber, still may, but depends on how long the backorder would take) and this seems like a very decent option in a potent cartridge. Just wanted to see what everyone thought of that rifle in that cartridge. Thanks.

No experience with that rifle but really like the cartridge

I'd bet my lunch money that it would do what you wanted it to do, just fine. Is it long action?

Yes it looked like a long action. My only concern would really be the "all-weather" side of things. I'd probably get it coated if I bought it but I'm not sure how I'd feel about the wood. I do trust savage as a good, accurate rifle, just worry how bad the weather would have to be before the wood stock would become an issue.

Get it bedded, and make sure it's free-floated, and you'll probably be fine. I'm a big believer in composite stocks, but they will add to the total of the rifle. Wood stocks have been in the field a long time. If/ when you can afford to put a composite stock on it, do so, if you're so inclined. I've had more than one rifle project that was on a lay-away plan.

I have refinished more than one new wood stock. A couple Remingtons come to mind, one of those I still have, a 788 in 7mm-08 that wears a maple stock that has been refinished 2 times. Would trust it on any hunt raining for a week or more. Hunted 4 days straight in the rain with it without any point of impact shift or loss of accuracy. When I refinished the stock the first time I glass bedded the action and free floated the barrel then sealed with true oil. It is about due another coat as the one that is there is 20+ years old.

I know this rifle is free floated but IDK if it's bedded...would you recommend removing the stock and treating it with oil before taking it hunting if I bought it? I would, or at least check it. On that 788 there were bare wood spots visible before taking the action from the stock. On my wood socked Cooper they recommend every couple years another coat of Tongue oil every couple years. It is due one this year, thanks for reminding me.

The Cooper M52 is my 6.5-284, that is one of the last guns I would part with. I sold 5 guns to get that one and the scope that is on it.

Oh wow! Yeah I'm in a bit of a pickle right now as I want/need a lighter rifle than I currently own for mountain hunting out here but can pretty much come up with an excuse to not sell any of the rifles I currently own haha. About the only one I might consider is a Wby Vanguard only b/c I got a good deal on it and I haven't shot it enough to become attached yet, though it's my only Wby right now and I love the 257wby ballistics! Such a tough decision, but a good problem to have.
