I bought a fully rifled slug barrel for my Remington 870 and went to try and sight it in today. First off, let me say that with just a 2 3/4" sabot slug cranking from the muzzle at 2000 fps, kicks like a mule! I would rank the recoil up there with that of my .257 Weatherby Magnum, lol. After mounting the barrel and the scope I started at 50 yds. and it was only about 4" from the bullseye low and left. I dialed it up and over and laid 2 rounds about a 1/8" from each other almost touching the 1/2" dot, dead center. Moved out to 100 yds. and then it got interesting. The slug rose about 3" from 50 to 100 yds but also went right about 4".

I redialed for windage and elevation and cranked one in right next to the dot. Fired 2 more rounds and they both rose about 2" and almost touched, I fired another round and it went left. Don't really know what happened but i will need to shoot some more to find out but I will have to buy some more ammo before I can do so.

Is the scope mounted to the receiver or is it a cantilever mount? There is enough play in the 870 lock up that you will see some movement in impact.

I am curious to see how you end up.

Here is my story..just an FYI...I have a dominate left eye so I shoot left handed and have a left handed Rem 12 gauge Model 1100. No rifled barrels available only the smooth bore. So I have that gun sighted in with Remington sluggers and can do Clover Leafs at 50 yards..... but I knew the longer ranges would be a push to hold a group. Tried a rifle choke and sabots but the did not shoot well....so I did experiment. Scope is on the receiver not the barrel BTW.

So I then bought a 20 gauge slug barrel for my TC ProHunter...shooting a 3" mag 20 gauge Federal Barnes expander pushing 1900 fps (that the bastards stopped making) I am about an inch high at 50yds and on at 100 yds and can touch 3 shots at bot 50 yds and 100 yds on a good day. So the groups hold tight. Scope is on the barrel and the barrel is 28 inches.

The scope mount can be a factor for sure, the difference between saddle mount off of the side of the receiver or a top mount like a traditional rifle or a cantilever off of the barrel all make a difference. And one isnt necessarily better than another it all revolves around the shotgun that it's on. Another very big factor is the consistency of the slug loads. The tolerances are not as close as a rifle round but yet we hope for something close to rifle "or at least muzzle loader" accuracy, they can drive you nuts trying when trying to sight in a slug gun. I've had a decent amount of experience with shooting slugs and trying to make accurate slug guns and I found that the most consistent and accurate slugs are from Lightfield Ammo.

Booner1,

I remember you from the Muzzleloader forum. I am guessing that you are using the Hornady slugs based on the 2000 fps comment you made. Besides making sure that everything is locked down (and I think a saddle mount will work okay if that is what you are using), and your scope is designed for a shotgun recoil...try a few different brands. I think I told you that I thought that for your gun the Remington AuccTips would probably shoot the best. I based that on what I see the guys in New Jersey use in their semiautos.

So my advice, for what it is worth, buy a few brands.....do not worry about sighting in and hitting the bullseye as long as you are on paper at 50 yds. Shoot a group of three from Band A..clean the gun.....shoot another group of 3 from Band B, etc. So what you want to do is find out which band and slug weight groups the tightest ...that should be your initial goal....then try and go with that brand and sight in.

Keep us posted.

My scope is mounted on a cantilever and attached to the barrel. I only made 1 adjustment to get a tight 2 shot group at 50 yds. and the slugs almost touched. I have ordered more ammo of different brands to see where each will pattern out after a 3 shot group. I am pretty stoked about the slug gun thing and hope that it proves to be another alternative in my weapons arsenal. I will post up some pics after doing some more testing when time and weather permits. It was really amazing that the slug rose about 3" from 50 yds. to 100 yds. The box claims to only rise about 3" total out to 150 yds and that is zero but it also drops almost 7" from 150 to 200. I am pretty sure that I will limit myself on yardage based on gun performance and my shooting ability.

Booner1,

Don't take this as gospel, but you might have some fun with this Nikon Ballistic Calculator (see link below).

Regarding your point of impacts versus what the box of shells states, what is critical is the distance from the center of the scope objective lens to the center of the barrel. Having it on the cantilever mount may be much higher then having it mounted to the barrel.....hence the reason that the actual impact doesn't match the predicted ballistics.
