I traded a fellow member here for this FN action in 7MM W'by with a 26" barrel. I only shot it twice to get it on paper at 75 yards and it is a fine shooter it seems. The barrel is blued as well as action and bottom metal. I would like to matte the barrel and bottom metal and leave the action as is. Some questions...

-I have HVLP sprayers, airbrushes etc, is it wort the effort to Dura coat over having a member here Cerakote it?

-Are there other options to achieve matte finish?

-Is one coating more durable than the other?

-Is it going to look odd with the blued receiver? (In your mind)

-Reckon what it might cost ballpark to get this done?

This is a pretty nice rifle to me, I would like to have it done right. I have only rattle canned duck guns, I think this deserves a bit better job. I appreciate any tips or suggestions

The bluing is "off" on the barrel and bottom metal. Kinda stained looking in places. It's not horrible at all. I'd just like it to be matte

Why not just get a good blue job? If you want to "coat it" you might just as well ge out a rattle can and paint it. The Coats chip and flake and look like crap after a while.

Duracoat does a fine job on matte finishing rifles. I personally prefer bluing, but that is not always economical or feasible. When duracoat is applied correctly, I have never seen it chip. If you don't clean correctly, prep the surface, or apply to heavy, it will chip. It does wear, but so does everything. Cerakote is even better, but its more prep than duracoat.

I believe that you have taken the wisest course.

Not intending to hurt any feelings here, but I tend to look down on rattle-canned and coated firearms. - Like having a glass of fine scotch and deciding to chase it with grape Kool-Aid.

Eeuwwww!

Kind regards, charlesb

Yeah, I needed the old Browning done, I got it when I was 8 (I am 54 now) and want to give it to my grandson so I figured just do em both at once

On a nice wood stocked gun like that I would get it reblued, by a professional. If it is a hard use rifle or something that I plan to use in all weather and beat around then I am a big fan of cerakote.

Nah, I have my beat around Savage 6.5 for that. This thing is nicer than what I usually have, I think I will make it an heirloom. (or as close as my kids are gonna get)

Cerakote is the way to go if you want the most consistent and durable finish on the market. The vast majority of semi-custom rifles wear a Cerakote finish. For complete weatherizing be sure and have all the parts coated. IIRC the inside of the barrel and even some parts may require a different type of coating material (teflon, I believe).

I was concerned enough about weather effects that I had blued rifle and all parts coated prior to my Yukon sheep hunt in 2006. It gave me great peace of mind as intermittent rain was a constant on that trip.

My Nosler Custom 48 (acquired since) came with a Cerakote finish and the internal parts coated also, as I believe do all of Nosler's synthetic rifles.

That said, If I wasn't worried about weather effects, I would simply have it re-blued.

Coincidentally, I just finished the chapter on the 7mm magnums in Boddington's just-released book "American Hunting Rifles II ". He marvels at the fact that, though Roy Weatherby's 7mm Wby. Mag was introduced in 1944 with even slightly better ballistics than the 7mm Rem. mag (that took the world by storm in 1962), the Wby. largely languished. It was and is a fine cartridge.

Lol here's a quote by Boddington I wish I had at the time of the recent .257 Wby. thread txtrophy85 started. About the .257 Wby, he states:

"If there's anything out there that shoots flatter and can be shot from the shoulder, I simply don't know what it is."

smile

NP, I actually got away from .264's and 7MM mags years ago when I discovered Viagra was cheaper. But the guy I got it from on here was in a bind and I had a shotgun he could use so we swapped. It is actually growing on me. Maybe I could buy a .257 barrel and start a whole new discussion!
