so i just picked up some .243 finally, local shop had been out then i got there just in time to pick up the last box of S&B anyways, when i was looking at my bolt trying to figure out how in the world it makes its magic happen, i noticed some light rust. nothing serious as the gun is a few weeks old. so i jumped on the interwebs, did some light reading, then figured some 3 in 1 oil would do for now. just for preventative measures. so question is, what oil? i asked dr.google and found a few options. outers, remoil, birchwood casey, hoppes, and wilson combat...but then i came across an interesting bit. somebody suggested using vehicle 10w-30 full synthetic like mobil-1 or the likes...while i can see the resemblance. can anybody back this up? i can get oil relatively cheap...but i dont know about that. it seems sketchy to my amateur eye

Mobil 1, STP oil treatment (not oil), Singer Machine Oil...depends on the application.
Make your own.

Make your own. I have used all of these, and they all work just fine.

Lots of guys use Mobil 1 on guns. Works great. I use it on the truck and then drain all the extra drops in the bottles into one bottle for use on the guns. I also use RemOil, CLP, Frog Lube, etc. Whatever is handy when cleaning/lubing.
It is far more important to be able to hit the target than it is to haggle over who makes a weapon or who pulls a trigger.

that was pretty informative. thanks! ill be picking up some one shot or frog lube tomorrow I use froglube now and like it alright. The only problem with it is the instructions on how to use it. I don't remember how to apply it off the top of my head but there are a few different steps you have to take to get it all right. Kind of a pain. Walter

For lubrication, synthetic motor oil is very good. It's designed to withstand a high temperature metal on metal environment in which the parts move against each other at tremendously high speeds repeatedly. Sound familiar?
It's not the best rust preventative though.

I use 3-1 oil on my guns frequently. Never had an issue. Ive never had a rust problem with any oil as long as I kept it lubricated.

The tests at that link are pretty severe because I've never had any rust using Rusteprufe, but it didn't fare well compared to the best of them.

I use Mobil one unless I need something thinner, then I use a spray can of Royal Purple.
I never use oil as a rust preventative or for storage, Renaissance Wax does a far better job for that.
Kind regards, charlesb

Wait -- Mobil One is oil isn't it and so is Royal Purple. So if you are using them and it isn't for rust prevention them what are you using them for?
