A Dallas rifle builder from the early to mid 80's. Anybody here have any history with them or ever see their rifles first hand? I have received a phone call with an offer to buy one of these rifles but don't know much about the builder other than they are no longer making them. They seem to be well made and high end from the little research I have come up with.

No sir, just "Alpha Arms Inc Dallas". Claims to have a Douglas barrel and custom take on a model 70 action.

An old acquaintance received one of these rifles in an estate and has asked if I would like to buy it. I'm very tempted to get it but the family is asking a pretty penny for it. I'm trying to do some research and wanted to start here.

What do you want to know? Great guns, high quality.... Their specialty was a 284, used nice wood or laminate. Had a LH grand slam model...it was nice. I also had a friend that had their Alaska model in a 358 win. If I remember correctly they were out of flower mound...like early 80s...kind of semi custom...like Dakota in the early days.

10 ring I think that was their jaguar model, that was built on the M70. If I remember correctly my rifle used a Dubiel action ( it was a grand slam model)...heck most were semi custom, probably a lot of Little nuances...

Thanks Ed.
This one does happen to be a .284 which is one I've been looking to acquire.

the 284 is a awesome round. I used to have one and with the 162 amax it was stupid accurate past 800 yards. I would not hesitate to get one except the brass is very very hard to find, if you can even get it. If you do not reload this is not a rifle you will want as factory ammo is hard to find and stupid expensive.

If you are a reloader the brass is not really an issue with the popularity of the 6.5-284 Lapua brass is available and a set of dies with a tapered expander works well for getting some great 284 brass.

Haven't seen one of those guns in years, but the one I shot in the late 80's a coworker owned was a good shooter.

True necking up the Lapua is a good choice but I never liked to have to add more steps to the process so I got one chance to buy a bunch of the Winchester and took it

true and has the correct head stamp. One of the reasons I do not have a 243, really like the 22/243 and too easy to confuse them at a glance.

284 is awesome in a mid to long action, pretty cramped for heavier pills in the short action configuration.

I had a plain jane model in .308 for about 5 years. Only moderately accurate ( 1 3/4" @ 100 with factory, 1 1/4 @ 100 with handloads ), but it was an absolute joy to carry and it had a nice trigger. There's nothing remotely M70ish about the action; it's a custom Alpha proprietary design. The value varies greatly, depending mostly on the finish. The ordinary grades bring more reasonable money.
