I got bored today, and I decided to pull the old marlin 780 (.22 rifle) out of the closet. And look it over. Bolt was hanging up last time out, realized it was rubbing on the scope, so I remountes the scope. Then I realized I had never checked if the barrel was free floated. It's not. I can't even get a dollar bill past the first 1/8" of the stock. It's always been an accurate rifle, but I'm wondering if I should go ahead and free float the barrel. I shoot it off of a bipod usually. I know it's usually recommended to free float center fire rifles. Wasn't sure about the .22s

My rule of thumb is "if it works, don't fix it." Unless it's truly a precision rifle, you're most likely to do more harm than good.

Free floated barrels allow the blast energy to resonate in unrestricted fashion along the barrel. I'm not sure the energy from a .22 is enough to require it.

Based on what I've seen, the design behind the most accurate .22 models is a heavier barrel.

All my 10/22's are free floated. I pillar bed them though. Most of my center fires get the same treatment.

there some .22 aficionados that will tell you a .22 barrel should be full support, ie not free floated. if its shooting well or as good as you want it I would change a thing.

this gun is pillar bedded and glass bedded from the back of the action up to 1" short of the end of the stock... I've got no complaints about it being this way..... your mileage may vari......
