Something modeled after the Versa Vise is what I'm after. Yost makes one, as does Shop Fox. These things are infinitely adjustable. All I'll need it for is cleaning, light maintenance, mounting scopes, etc.....

Who has one and would make a recommendation on a brand and source?

My buddy uses a regular vise and buys magnetic inserts that have rubber on one side that stick on the jaws.

Just great! I did not know anything like this existed, therefore, did not know I needed one!!! The Garret looks like a complete unit.

Lothar Gunsmithing Vise

Works great if your budget will allow it.

I think I'll go conventional, and not a gunsmith type. Soft jaws as an add on and one that has a head that rotates to put the jaws in a vertical position would be more versatile. Yost makes one, multifunctional, 5 in 1 type.

I bought a Shop Fox about eight years ago, I think from Midway. The piece of crap broke after just a few uses---and I was never rough on it. No warranty help, nothing.

Thanks for the heads up. Saw that one on Midway. Surprised they didn't stand by it. I like Midway.

I use a Tipton Best Vise. I dont have enough room for a permanent vise. The Tipton works great for gun cleaning. Plus, I'm not twisting off any barrels

I have to agree with Buzzsaw. For cleaning & scope mounting one of the $50 gun cradles work great. If I'm polishing a bore or other vigorous treatment I clamp the cradle to the bench with C-clamps.
