You’ve got to train your [censored] off if you want to win.
Went to our annual pistol qualification today at 8pm. As I do every Monday I inspected my pistol, everything checked out good. During the qual, on the 3rd string of fire I had a spent round get stuck in the pipe and the next round was trying to take its place. I did the tap rack procedure and saw the fail so moved to Rip Reload Rack and cleated the issue. I wasn’t fast enough to get the last 2 shots off, 3 out of 5 didn’t sit well with me. If we shoot over a 90 on every qual we get a shooting bar and numbers are added for every 3 years you stay above 90. Get a 10 on your shooting bar and your name goes up on a wall. My step dads name is on that wall, and I want mine on that damn wall. Having 2 rounds missing from the target will not keep you above 90.
As a result of the stoppage, and my ability to clear it without hesitation, the shooting staff gave me the 2 rounds. They were just happy I didn’t give up like a lot do. Ended the qual with a 99.2, I dropped 2 rounds outside of the 10 ring.
In my haste to leave the house, I didn’t grab my clear glasses and had to shoot at night wearing sunglasses.
Train train train, it will be the difference in winning or losing.

As a result of the stoppage, and my ability to clear it without hesitation, the shooting staff gave me the 2 rounds. They were just happy I didn’t give up like a lot do. ^^That is from handling and shooting a pistol a whole bunch. Same can be said with the AR, and the bolt action. Ammo has problems, dirty, something comes loose, shoot enough rounds and you will see it, and remember what to do next time. Well done.

Winchester moved their ammo production and their rate of defects went up. Last year, a Winchester white box pistol round split open length wise on me. I was at an instructor course and several in the room commented on Winchester ammo problems in the last year, which is why I asked. Remington also received poor feedback.

Of course, Jeff. The same can be said for brands of firearms.
I am working my way toward running only hand loads in my pistols, same as my rifles. And for the same reasons as the rifles, I can build better, and more reliable ammo than the mass production machine can.

This is right along the lines of the types of rifle matches where we use all kinds of fixed objects to suoport the rifle. When you're challenged like that, you learn from the veterans, and figure out how to adapt a position to get the rifle still. Odd-ball ranges, to go with it. Rarely is something at an even 100 yard line. More like 417, 587, 729, ect. Make hits in those conditions, and you are in much better shape while hunting. You can use the truck, the trailer, the barb wire fence, the tree limb, and so on.

Lots of lessons in there. What ammo and pistol were you using? Thank you for taking time to post and well done. Hornady Critical Duty, in my case the beloved 357Sig. My department went away from Winchester white box about 4 years ago because of too many failures. With the number of rounds they buy per year, all at one time, and the number they find defective, it will make you never look at Winchester ammo again. Like JG said, it can happen to any of them. I didn’t retrieve the case that jammed to see what happened, so I can’t tell you if it was the guns fault or the ammo. The most common failure in the 357 Sig round is seating to deep and causing over pressure which usually splits the case. Since I clean or inspect my gun every Monday, I take the round out of the chamber, strip a few rounds out of a random magazine, and place the round somewhere in the stack. Continuously loading the same round back into the chamber can cause issues like I mentioned above.
