Has anyone seen a fan of the .300 Ultra Mag in the wild? Do they really exist?

Inquiring minds want to know why you like the .300 UM. What practical advantage is there over the other .300 magnums?

It has legitimate uses. Most find it impractical for typical Texas whitetail hunting, but it really shines for delivering energy at extended ranges.

The problem with the RUM is controlling that energy. It's the only cartridge I will not guarantee less than MOA accuracy with on my load work ups. It's a very finicky round. I'm not a fan. I have seen several high end custom rifles shoot very with it. It likes the heavy bullets, 200+ grains.

I know one guy that uses one. He said he bought ten or fifteen years ago when the RUM cartridges where more common. He wanted more power because he lost an elk that he shot with a .270.

I've never had any interest in it because it is so much more expensive than 300 win mag and ammo choices are more limited. It is better, I just don't think it's worth it. That extra 250 fps doesn't make it an elephant rifle so I don't see the point. It's still an elk rifle.

Ran one out to 1700 yards in September. It didn't do so well less than 200 yards, but past that, it did pretty well.

My bet is it wasn't the 270's fault. confused2

That's why I don't express "opinions" and simply speak matter of factly, because FACTS just "happen" to matter.

It makes things deader fo sho.
Way too much gun for deer and coyotes.

Good buddy of mine had a really nice .300 RUM built about 8-9 years ago. He never could get it shooting the way he expected it to. Spent a lot of time and $ experimenting with different handloads to end up with about the same groups as my straight-out-of-the-box .270 Win. It would punch a hella big hole in stuff, though...

Terminal Effects/"holes" are a function of projectile selection, more than cartridge selection.

The Impact Velocity spectrum of a 300 Ultra and a 270 Win,are rather alike, though projectile mass is different.

Most folks are wayyyyyyy over headstamped, wayyyyyyyy under bulleted and wayyyyyyyyy over X'd in magnification...none of which does any favors, regarding Connect Percentages.

Hint..............

I love the 300 RUM especially with 230 bergers, it does like to burn barrels though. Im still trying to get my hands on some bertram brass for it, but norma will have to do till then. I was getting 2985 out of my 300 RUM with a 26" barrel with the 230 gr berger hybrids, not sure what it will do now since its at the smith getting overhauled with a 28" carbon wrapped barrel.

What are the particulars of the platform?
Action?
Barrel?
Twist?
Throat?
COAL latitude?
Loaded length?
Base/rings?
Glass?

Pics are always nice...............
