I am just now getting into some hunting. A buddy needed some money real bad so I bought an H & R 20 gage that has a barrel that says Ultra Slug. I was told it would be decent for hogs or critters around my place. I have shot it and like the gun. When I got it I was told I could also get another barrel that I could use to shoot other shells. I am going to be doing some dove hunting and wondered if this gun would be good and what type of barrel I could get to shoot the proper shells.

Just get smooth bore with mod choke. That current barrel is probably rifled for sabot slugs. Does it have a bead or front and rear rifle sight?

Excuse my ignorance regarding guns but I was told that what I paid for the gun wouldn't have bought the nice Nikon scope that is on the top of the barrel. It is a nice gun and seems pretty powerful when I have shot it with a nice scope and to be honest my wife wanted me to buy it because of the awesome looks of the wood finish on the gun.

I wish I knew someone in the Kaufman area that I could go to to answer questions and purchase a barrel etc.

since Remington shut down H&R, you can't get a factory barrel fitted anymore. go to Graybeard Outdoors and look at their classifieds. also look through the FAQS section and you'll find a lot of answers there.
if you have an ultra slug gun, you'll not want to be altering it and should hold onto it as you'll probably never find another if you paid a cheap price for it.

When friends that know guns see it and find out I paid $200.00 for it they about croak. I have been offered between $600.00 and $800.00 for it but since even though I am 64 years old and have always fished year round and not done any hunting I am really interested in starting to do some hunting. The looks of the gun are really awesome and with the scope I think I will just keep it for what it can be used for. I actually have another small 20 gage that I am sure will work for me I just really wanted to show off the other gun.

Don't shoot bird shot out of it..that barrel for sabot slugs. U can buy a single shot 20ga for about $100 to dove hunt or look for a used Mossberg 500

Magspa is right on with his answers. I have used rifled slug guns and with todays sabot's they are very accurate. Get a smooth bore, 7.5 shot and blast some doves. Enjoy!
Longtime hunter/shooter/fisherman who loves being outdoors. I used to hunt/compete with my son, but he's now stationed in Germany. Never enough time.
