Buddy and I were talking about this the other day and we came to an impasse because neither of us had an educated guesstimate on cost. About what would it run to take my 223 Varmint and swap out the bolt and barrel to make it a 6.5CM with the same heavy profile barrel. Something quality like a Bartlein for instance.

This could be an item on my 5-year plan, but this is nowhere in the near term future for me. Just enjoying learning everything with a 223 for now.

It depends on what gunsmith you use . A Bartlien barrel will cost about $340 and another $300ish to chamber cut and crown the barrel plus another $100 to thread the barrel for a brake or suppressor. As far as the work on the bolt I have no idea.

Buy a new action. You could take a perfectly good action and do a bunch of surgery on it, or you could buy a used tikka with the right bolt face and do it the right way. Trust me, doing what you're describing will not be cheaper or easier, lol.

You'll need a bolt. I checked last week, a bolt is $400. Might as well put another $100 with it, and buy a donor rifle with a bolt that has the proper bolt face.

Makes sense, thanks yall. Definitely cheaper to swap it out.

Cattleman - so a $340 barrel doesn't already come cut and crowned?

I am in the same exact situation with same exact rifle for a pipe dream of mine. I've come to the same info and conclusion. The replacing of the barrel will be whatever based on the barrel u buy and gunsmith. The bolt itself is the only unique issue and it's just not worth getting only a bolt.

I'm a dude who likes long barrels!

No, you buy a blank and then pay the gunsmith to ream your chamber and crown it.

This would all be much simpler if Tikka imported a Varmint in 6.5CM. Maybe they will in 5 years when I'm ready to make this upgrade.

Thanks all!

A blank is $340?

Yeah, and they are the best barrels in the world. Bartlein, Brux, Rock Creek, Kreiger, Obermeyer.

I noticed Shilen was not on your list. Is there a reason for that?

Shilen is fine. They are a button barrel, not a cut rifle barrel.
