This rifle arrived at my FFL two weeks ago just as he was leaving on a week long vacation and about the time he returned we hosted a weeklong family reunion at our ranch (remind me later not to do that again)! Anyway, I picked it up today.

It is a Winchester M94 Timber Scout chambered in 44 Mag. It joins my TS chambered in 30-30. I believe they were both manufactured in 2005.

I had a hard time finding a 44 Mag; I didn't realize how few of both were made. Only 500 30-30s and possibly 100 44 Mags.

As the pictures suggest (hang tag still on rifle), my 44 is NIB which is lost on me. It will get treated with care, but it will get hunted like every rifle I own. This 44 Mag joins a Marlin 1894P and a Rossi 92, both scout rifles as well. I had a Marlin 336-44 but sold it a couple of years ago. It was a great rifle but there was no longer any spares parts, parts specific to the 336-44. The carrier had a lifter on it, a very complicated setup and most of the failures on the old rifles happened there and rendered them unusable. I also have a Ruger 77/44 but that will soon be hitting the road as I have not developed the warm fuzzy feeling for it.

With the M94 35/30-30, I have a post about that rifle; this will probably bring my Winchester buying to a close.

Cool rifle, the M94 I have is a Trapper version from I believe 1992 IIRC. It was my Dad's deer gun from when we got it new then until he quit hunting. I know he killed deer from 20 to 175 yards with that gun. It will be one of my nephews guns in the future since he took his first deer with it. Other 44Mags in the safe are not lever actions though. Remington 788, Ruger semi-auto and a custom that was built by a gunsmith out of parts for the action, mixture of M98 and 1903 with a full length walnut stock, McGowen barrel, Williams sights and uses the same mags as the 788. I picked it up used at a gunshow, cool little rifle.

Now you need a Timber Carbine to go with the Scout! clap

Always thought the Timber Carbine was probably the nicest 94 they ever made. If I ever run across one in 450 Marlin again I will buy it if its priced right.

I've looked at many a 444 Marlin Timber Carbine online, and there was one priced right while I was waiting for the auction to close on this latest Timber Scout.

What would send me over the edge would be if the XS Scout Mount fit the Timber Carbine 444 Marlin. I've never had a rifle in hand to measure if the dovetail is the required 4" from the front of the receiver. Anybody out there have one?

I've cut down on my 444 shooting because as I age, my arthritis bothers my shoulder at the point of some surgery I had in before the turn of the century (love that most of us can say that).

I had a Marlin 1895MR, which was the 450 Marlin rifle not the short barreled Guide Gun, and it was quite a rifle.

I'll measure mine tonight.

That NIB 44 is a great looking rifle!

That is sweet. Congrat's to you sir. Lever actions get in your blood no doubt. I've got a Henry in .357 mag and the action on that rifle is slick as butter. Enjoy!

Looks like you are out of luck! Measures 2 3/8" center of dovetail to front of receiver.
With your skill set and the dovetail jig cutting a new dovetail in the proper place should be fairly simple. cheers

Thanks, okie! Yeah, this is still doable, just wanted to know what I was going to face. Need an angle-eject or I would have to drill and tap two holes on the forward receiver and then like, on the sides for the XS Ghost Ring. Might be a bit before I start looking and I've exceeded my gun budget for a couple of months!

Shot a hog under a feeder light at 2:30 am this morning with this rifle's older brother, a 30-30 Win. 70-yards, DRT. Using my C311-170-RF pushed with 30.6-grains of H4895 for 2080 FPS. The "smack" of that flat point hitting the hog was a loud as the shot!

Haah, I figure I will be taking the big dirt nap one of these days and need to get all I can get out of my life! I do take a nap during the day, everyday. With the temperatures at 100° nothing is moving during the daylight, so that means I need to hunt at night.

Sometimes, I get up in the middle of the night and just take a walk. Honestly, I like being in the brush during the night.

Thanks but not a 307! Are you reloading for that rifle? If so, what are you doing for brass? I see where Captech (Jamison) has it now.

I like it, a lot; but I'm a fan of lever guns. My first center-fire rifle was a Marlin 30-30 back in 1980. Currently, I only have a Rossi M92 trapper and a Rossi Ranch Hand both in .357.

I've been thinking about getting a big bore lever action and matching revolver. As a reloader I was pretty set on going with a Rossi M92 and a Ruger Blackhawk convertible in 45 Colt (acp also for the convertible). However, after getting the Blackhawk convertible 45 Colt/45acp; I hated it. The plow handle grip did nothing for me and I didn't like how the cylinder didn't index for easier loading/unloading. That may have been my shortest period of owning a firearm, about three weeks.

So now I'm thinking maybe a Ruger Redhawk in 44mag and a Rossi M92.

Check out the Ruger Bisley, it has a different grip that i personally find much, much more comfortable than the standard Blackhawk grip.
