We're being told that you can hurt yourself clearing a live round from the chamber. The story is RIGHT HERE.

I do it too but I hang onto the slide until I know the round is out of the chamber and either in my hand or the magazine well. I'll bet the guy who did this was trying to hold onto too many things at once.

I rack the slide with the ejection port racing upward. The round ejects about 18" upward and I catch it. Always stay clear of moving equipment.
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

Unless I'm standing next to the seat of my truck, clearing defensive ammo, going to target ammo. Then I let it eject into the seat. Can't be too careful.

Ive seen first hand the bullet end of a 45 acp set off the primer end of a 45 acp in a bag of loose ammo. I dont discount anything when it comes to firearms and ammunition. Hammers seem pretty harmless until the first time you miss and land on your thumb.

Just another reminder to be mindful of something striking the primer - no matter what it might be.
Cartridges are little bombs - pretty safe little bombs, but still gotta be careful.

Yes, that method in the article is a no-go. If I am at home and I need to clear my pistol (where you certainly do not want a round to go off), I will first eject the mag, and turn the pistol sideways to eject the round and lock the slide to the rear at the same time. I make sure the slide locks to the rear and often can catch the ejected round or simply let it fall.
If I am on the range, I'll eject the mag, and sometimes eject the round out and catch it. But the mag needs to be clear and you need to make sure the round clears the chamber. It's a somewhat riskier method, but works when done properly.

By the sounds of it he will have to set his pistol down somewhere to do that.

I never liked letting the ejected round hit the ground because of the possibility of the primer striking something.

Would not have thought of that - thanks for posting the story.
A Democracy is when two wolves and a lamb vote on the dinner menu. That is why this country was specifically not designed as a Democracy. We are a Constitutional Republic.
