Time to start loading for the XL 7 270 I bought earlier, but looking for ideas on deadening the f'glass stocks hollow noisemaker "qualities". Adding a little weight would be OK too.
Ya'll got any ideas or suggestions? Was thinking about using a spray in expanding foam weather/leak proofing type product. Can the rubber butt pad be easily removed to access the largest hollow area there? Does that create a weight distribution issue? solvable by filling the forend too with the same stuff? Any ideas welcomed. Ron

Yes, that rubber butt pad is just held on with two screws. Butt stock is hollow behind it. I have used bagged crushed walnut in one before to fill the space and add some weight, works ok. Balance was still acceptable.
IMO the best option is to order a laminate stock from Boyd's for about $130. Real game changer for those rifles.. The X7's are great rifles but the factory tupperware stock leaves alot to be desired. I own 3, and two are in laminates.

Hmmm GTK about the 2 screws that would give access to the inside of the butt for a BandAid fix Yup, had planned eventually to go to a plywood Boyd's and favor the Classic's classic lines & maintain the stocks weatherproof feature, but as always got more mouths to feed than spoons available. Thx Ron

He He, yes sir, know the feeling!
I think you'll be happy with the rifle. I have one in .270 as well. It is my go-to TX rifle and has accounted for alot of game in it's short life. It likes 130gr Accubonds over a load of 4831sc.
Good luck!

...and that MAX load of SC & 130's is what my T3 liked well enough to forget about anything else in old Red Box style Nosler FB's...but would slap you worse than yo mama ever did. You could hide a 4 shot group under the tip end of your little finger at 100yds. NOT gonna repeat that in this Marlin one way or the other. BTDT already.
The Plan is to run some 150 Speer RN's at bottom level nodes or wherever they land no more than 1/2 way UP the bottom line of the charge list, for a 75-100 yd Zero and not more than 3"'s low at a 200 yd impact....and forget shooting at anything beyond 250.
Set up a POS budget gun one time like that and popped a good'un scout porker at under a 100' in the rain using a '06 in 165's ...dead is dead and almost NO felt kick on my end even without a recoil pad in a 7lb all up gun.
Mr Porker heard me click off the safety as I mounted the gun and wheeled away from me....to the left. The bullet caught him right behind the last rib on his left side as he was mid turn quartering away from me and broke his off shoulder, it was recovered under the skin as it exited after going THRU the right shoulder like a drill bit.
Thats exactly the kind of hunting I expect to do with this Marlin...and take it to the car wash to get it clean enough to sack it back up in the case.
That's the nite in 36-38* temps I took a shower in the car wash too, stripped down to my skivies in front of the headlights of the truck. Ron

The problem is that its a .270 Winchester! lol They've always had a bite with recoil for me.
Like some have said: adding some weight, either in the stock or getting a laminate, should help a bunch.

weelll I've got a couple cases of old shotgun reloads somebody was 'posed to come get to harvest the lead shot out them, and apparently has lost interest. So I guess I could do the grunt work my own self, and load the butt & forend of the Marlin up with # 8 shot and back fill it with FG gel or steel paste stuff? to hold the shot in place ...but then that'd prolly be a bit tooo heavy right?
Sooo what's the Happy medium. Sumbody said they'd used some sort of crushed shells in bags...any other ideas out there beside spray in foam which don't weigh nuthin', but might be a good sound deadener... Ron
