I'm looking to make a caliber change from 300 win mag to ? I have a savage 110 that is currently a 300 win mag. I'm looking to change to something a lilt more economical. I don't hunt, only target shooting. Looking for some thing long range, out to 1000 yds. What are your suggestions for a long action, long range target rifle?

FYI, you can use your 110 action for a short or long actions doner, I have a few of them.

I do hand load. I am thinking some kind of 6.5 or 7mm. I already have a couple 243 and 308.

7 Rem Mag with 180 Berger VLDs is my hot rod. You could go win that case and try Hornady ELD. They're about to smash Berger's BC.

6.5 mm, keeping that bolt face will make for a super fast 140 gr bullet MV, but you'll not have very much barrel life, less than 1000 rounds I bet.

Long action with a 30-06 bolt face 280, 280 A.I., 284 Win, 6.5-284 6.5-06, 6.5-06 A.I. to name a few.

All of those are quite comfortable well beyond 1K yards.

284 Winchester or 7mm RSAUM. The higher BCs in the 7mm projectiles are hard to beat.

6.5 284 Winchester or a 6.5 x 7mm wsm the 6.5 bullets would be better for 1000 yds.

You say looking for something economical, to me if you handload you are looking for something with a smaller case capacity.

280 rem seems like a good one. I have thought about doing a 6.5-06 or a 6mm-06, or like others have said you can build any of the short action calibers on a long action as well.

Can you build a .284 on a short action? My guess is that it won't handle the length needed to seat the heavier bullets?

284 Winchester is a short action round, it does limit capacity with long bullets. You can build it on a custom from a long action with a long throat for using long bullets. The 6.5-284 Norma is just the 284 necked down to 6.5 but the specs are for using a long action so the bullets can be seated longer

You'll get more rounds out of the .284 than a 6.5x.284....plus better BC. I'm getting a .284 built on a long action to run 180's (can't wait until its finished). The .284 is one of the most inherently accurate cartridges made so you can go wrong with the .284.

Just curious, why 284 instead of 7mm mag?

Reasons would have been:
1. Short Action (already have one to build from)
2. Something a little unique
3. Awesome cartridge, earlier/better version of the 7mm-08

But, if I have to go long action then I'd likely go 280AI or 7mag, or build heavy and go 7-300 or 300 Win.

Other than I don't see much economical in the change from 300 win mag to 7 mag, it probably would cost you more to load for 284 as dies and cases would cost more.

I think right now I'm leaning towards a 6.5 creedmoor, I'll have to change the bolt face but not a big deal. I think I have a 26 inch barrel located.

The trend I have notcied is the move from 30 caliber downwards.
The 6.5 bullets have better section density and ballistic
Coifishent.
The larger caliber have more weight and a lower sectional density.

I am interested in seeing this explanation.

*Higher BC = more retained percentage of initial velocity down range

The trick is when you want to push a heavier bullet hard, you need case capacity to fill with powder. And in a long action, the 6.5 mm can only get to a 143 gr, yet the 7mm can get to 162 gr, 168 gr, 175 gr, 180 gr, all with an incredibly high BC. They may leave the barrel slower, but they can be faster than the 6.5 mm at the thousand yard line. Even if they're not traveling faster, they can wind drift less, back to the bullet weight/ higher BC factors. And wind drift is the trick to the trade.

Drop down to a short action, with common calibers and the 7mm vs. 6.5 mm wind drift is degligible. But make a short action into a some-what wildcat, give it 24" of barrel, or more, and the sevens can shine.

My biggest problem is that I don't have the knowledge to read the wind.
