I seemed to have gotten a great deal on a Weatherby Vanguard Deluxe rifle at my local Walmart. By all indications, they had the more expensive Vanguard Deluxe model marked at the discounted price ($657) of Weatherby's Sporter model which lists for $895. The more expensive Deluxe model which lists for $1,147 includes a high-luster bluing, whereas the Sporter comes in a matte finish. The rifle that I picked up at the much lower price has the high-gloss bluing.

I just happened across it after noticing a bolt action with a nice-looking wood stock in the display case. As many of you know, you usually have to go to a gun shop to find bolt action deer rifles with a wood stock. The discount stores seem to only carry bolt actions with synthetic stocks.

The Deluxe model looks very much like a Browning A-bolt.

They still have the same rifle in stock at the same price in .243 and .300 Mag if anyone is interested.

Weatherby Vanguard Deluxe

I have a delux, it is a very pretty gun and has been a great shooter as well. You sure your not getting mark V delux and vanguard mixed up?

If your right prices have gone up.

There is some confusion according to the labeling on the box. The box is labeled "Deluxe Sporter". However, the Weatherby website shows the Deluxe and Sporter rifles as separate, with the high-luster bluing being a key differentiator to the Deluxe model. The owner's manual identifies it as a Vanguard Series 2.

I found this on another site...

"The Weatherby Vanguard Sporter is Weatherby's less expensive walnut stocked, bolt action centerfire rifle. It carries a retail price of $849, compared to the Vanguard Series 2 Deluxe that has upgraded wood and highly polished blue for $1149 (2113 MSRP). The synthetic stocked models have an MSRP of $649."

Maybe it's a Walmart exclusive? Cabelas had a Weatherby Lazerguard for awhile that was basically a really nice & pretty Vanguard. Took everything in my power to avoid buying it. The stock was beautifully engraved. It was too pretty and I knew it would get put in a gun sock and stuffed in the gun safe so I denied myself. Now they don't seem to be making them anymore and I regret not picking one up.

That might explain it. I know this rifle is every bit as polished (both stock and bluing) as my Browning A-bolt Medallion, and with a barrel that's longer than my Remington Model 700. It's also clearly stamped as a Vanguard on the receiver.

I'm betting that it's a Wal Mart exclusive. I picked up a Lazerguard from Cabela's last year for around $700.

Perhaps a special agreement between Walmart and Weatherby to offer the Vanguard Deluxe at the price of a Sporter. Again, this rifle is clearly marked as a Vanguard, and includes a Vanguard Series 2 owner's manual.

Yes, I have found evidence of that, as the model name (Deluxe Sporter) suggests it's an "in between" model that includes the high luster bluing of the more expensive Deluxe model, but without the inlay on the stock. I can find no other differences between it and the more expensive Deluxe model.

Still a great deal since it's about $250 less than what others are selling the less expensive Sporter model.

Or better yet, alert others of the unique model being offered at a great price.

I wish the vanguard came in 26" barrels

The deluxe vanguards look almost identical to the mark V's

The quick giveaway is perhaps the red recoil pad on the Mark V. The Deluxe models carry a dark gray recoil pad.

Man, when we get up there around 8-900 bucks, we're getting close enough to bump up to a bottom end custom from APR or one of the other builders out there. I'm in the camp of a 200 buck Savage or a 12-1300 buck custom.

I tend to side with you, but there are a lot of guys that care just as much about glossy wood and beautiful bluing as they do accuracy.

My most used rifle is a Vanguard Deluxe (has a red recoil pad but isn't a mark v) in .30-06.

I bought it around 1999-2000 so maybe the quality is different, but the finish on the metal and wood is really nice still and it hasn't aged a day since I first got it. It's a great shooter and while it won't do .5 MOA with the light barrel on it, it's accounted for the majority of my animals.

A good and valid point.

I've heard that in 2017 Vanguards in magnum cartridges will have 26" barrels.

There's nothing wrong with a pretty rifle.

No sir, there is nothing wrong with a pretty rifle. It just seems every time I take one out, it gets another bump or bruise. I try to remember how each one got there so it means something when I see it.

Besides, the out-of-the-box accuracy of today's sporting rifles is plenty good enough to take down wild game with a tremendous level of consistency.

When the weather and brush is expected to be rough, I take what I consider to be my "utility" rifle, a more simple and yet equally effective Remington 700 ADL.

Also, a coat or two of a good paste wax helps protect wood stocks from normal wear. And there are some fantastic synthetic waxes that work extremely well.

I think sporter deluxe and deluxe are one in the same. I bought mine several years ago, a s1 sporter deluxe, has the high gloss wood and bluing and I believe a red recoil pad.

Only picture I have of it, but its a very pretty gun. I bought mine in 2008 for $580 pre tax.

It is labeled correctly. The rifle is a secial make up for walmart.
It has a high gloss sporter stock and a high blue barrel.
The only difference between a deluxe and a deluxe sporter is the spacers on the forend tip and grip cap.
These guns have the same sub moa guarantee as all Weatherby rifles.
And they are an incredible deal. Also there is an addition coming to the website showing this model.

Thanks for that clarification.

I believe the Deluxe model also has a spacer in the stock butt.

The photo below shows the spacer and inlay at the stock grip which is not found on the Sporter and Deluxe Sporter (special offering by Walmart) models.

I don't know about the dif between sporter/sporter delux. Mine is a sporter delux it has the accent strip between the cap on the end of the stock and on the grip portion. I really don't know about the white diamond shaped accent piece. I do know I didn't buy mine at Walmart, but again ive had mine for a few years already.
