Before everyone starts spewing names of friends and friends of friends.Let me explain what I'm looking for, or what I'm not looking for. I do not want someone that specializes in the AR style gunsmithing and so forth, but someone who specializes in wood working.

I have a OLD Sears and Roebuck 30-06 that was my granddads. He gave it to my dad when he was 16 and dad gave it to me when I was 16 and it needs some cosmetic repair. I'm debating on refinishing the entire stock and giving it back to dad for Christmas since he's stuck shooting the 7mag and it's a liitle much for him lol! Plus my son is only 5 so it will be a while before I hand it down to him.

With that being said, I'm looking for a experienced gunsmith North of the DFW area that can get me fixed up!

I have not talked to him in many years, but Scott Mays in Denton has done many projects like you are looking for. 940-368-0857. Give him a call and see. He completed several beautiful wood stocks with custom checkering and engraving. I would stand around to watch him do his work a few times, and was amazed at the detail and fine lines he made, and how he did it.

TDK on here does beautiful work, but he may be TOO good for what you want. He specialized in building guns from scratch.

Is it a J.C. Higgins?

J.C. Higgins was a name Sears sold firearms under. I think you have a post-64 Model 70 Winchester. I read somwhere a long time ago that some of them(Model 53) had birch stocks but no nothing about the veracity of that claim.

I have been shooting a model, 53 for years.
It is my go to gun. A model 70 long action stock will fit it, non feather weight. The feather weight has a small barrel chanel.
It is a ranger action precisely.
A long action stock will fit but it will work by buying a floor plate.
The 53 has a solid wood no opening.
