I have a Thompson Contender 23" barrel and like it. I've only had it a year, mild recoil and accurate with factory loads.

I set one up for my daughter to hunt with this year. So far the range results seem good. Guess the proof is in the pudding on taking down a deer though.
18" Wilson Combat Fluted Stainless barrel, JP Handguard, Aero upper with no Forward assist but with cover RRA 2 stage trigger, Leup MK4 4-14
Shoots sub MOA so far with just about anything we have put in it.

In my opinion its the best caliber for hunting in the AR15 platform. I am not just saying that because I use one, I am saying that because I have used it extensively over the last 4 years and have always been very impressed it! On multiple occasions I have dropped multiple mid size hogs with a single shot. The buck in my signature picture was dropped with a 6.8 as well. It was about a 100 yard shot severely quartering away so I had to aim very far back to angle it into the vitals. Buck went less than 20 yards before crashing and he was a very large bodied buck.
I could have built any caliber I wanted but after months of reading the 6.8 made the most sense for hunting purposes.

It's a great round. I've used it on feral hogs and our CenTex deer with devastating effect. It's certainly not a "bean field" caliber, but out to 200 yards or so, it'll take 'em down, DRT.

I have several and really enjoy shooting them and they will be more effective and a better hunting round than the 556. One of mine has an AR15 Performance barrel on it and it will shoot .75 all day with factory Hornady 120 gr SST. I have taken it out to 600 yards on several occasions.
My next build will likely be a 14.5 sbr with another AR15 Performance barrel.
I was wrong...on anything technical. Fitz............. is right, ya know............

I like mine. The only con IMO is that you can shoot 5.56 for so much cheaper.

I'm a HUGE 270 fan. But I can't get on board for the 6.8 yet, when it comes to AR's. Comparing the 6.8 to the 300 blk out, the blk out is just so much more versatile. Yes, the 6.8 has more power than a 300 blk out, but not by much. In a 16 barrel, a 115 Berger runs 2300+ fps. A 6.8 pushes the same weight bullet only 100 fps faster (maybe 150) in the same 16" barrel. The 30 cal bullet choices and variety are about 10X that of the 6.8. In the AR platform, the conversion for 300 blk out uses all existing components as 223, like bolt carrier, mags, etc. It's just hard for me to sway from the 300 blk out.

I have one. I built mine for pig hunting at night. Its extremely accurate, the one i have anyway. I have only killed one pig with it thus far. Here's a video if you want to check it out. Also I know TexasLawman uses a 6.8 and has quite a few kills with it. I think his youtube page is Lonestar boars. His success alone should at least intrigue you dig more. There is also a lot of info on 68forums. I was on the fence with the 300 blackout and the 6.8. I can get 6.8 ammo in a lot places and the 300 blackout seems to be showing up better than in the past. I don't reload so I wanted to make sure I can quality ammo readily accessible. I am sure I will end up with a 300 blackout at some point but at the moment I couldn't be happier.

And yes you have to have a separate components as mentioned above. Mine is a complete upper so all I have to do is pull 2 pins and swap between my 556 and 6.8. If I had a 300 blackout I would do the same. So for me, those added components shouldn't be a sway vote. If your getting rid of your 556/223 barrel using all the same parts and converting to a 300, then I can see that coming into play.

As stated above it is a great round and in my opinion the best deer and hog hunting round in the AR platform. It has numerous hunting bullets to choose from and they have become readily available in stores. it outperforms the 300BO at any distance.

I think your velocities are way low for the 6.8 chad. Many reloading 115 grain bullets are breaking the 2600 fps mark using 16" arp barrels safely. 120 sst almost 2600. My friend has been getting 2575 using a 120 sst with no signs of pressure in a 16" arp barrel. I get 2420 fps using anemic factory Hornady ammo out of a 12.5" barrel. Lots of info about loads and such on the 6.8. I believe harrison that owns arp was getting about 2700 fps with the 120 sst and that is moving! http://68forums.com/forums/

6.8 SPC works about like my 257 Roberts which is damn effective. 6.8 Ranch with 120 SST 6.8 Precision Reflex with 115 Fusions

Just saw on 6.8 forums, guy killed a big bull moose using the 115 fusion at 213 yards, but he thought he was using a 90 grain gold dot till he found the bullet. The recovered bullet was a boattail and still weighed over 110 grains, then he realized he grabbed the wrong ammo LOL. Wifes first kill using my sbr. Its a arp 12.5" barrel.

That is a good eating size hog. I like the 6.8 for predators and medium game but it would be pretty far down the list of rifles I own for hunting elk or moose.

I dont think the 6.8 gives up anything to the 6.5 grendel out of a 16" barrel. 123 grain going 2400 fps+\- (bc.5) or a 6.8 spc 120 sst (bc.4) running 2600 fps +\-. Same drop and energy out to 800 yard. Then you also have a little weaker bolt due to case being even wider then the 6.8, which some say is to weak already. Factory ammo velocity for the 6.5 grendel is out of a 24" barrel. Wife wanted to do a grendel, but after a little research, didnt see a need to have another caliber, when the one we have is bout the same. So, I'm putting together another 6.8 spc. The way people talked about the Grendel i thought it was far better retained energy then what i came up with.

My comment would be there is no real world difference between the 6.8 SPC and the 6.5 Grendel. For hunting, both do the same thing out to the same distance. I only picked the 6.8 because I bought the Ranch Rifle first and then put together the AR and didn't want to reload for another cartridge.
If you don't reload, the 6.8 has more choices in factory ammo and most of it is hunting ammo. It's usually a little cheaper.

It is far more important to be able to hit the target than it is to haggle over who makes a weapon or who pulls a trigger.
