Sold my SOCOM 16 so I'm looking for an AR format .308. Been reading lots of reviews on the DPMS G2 Recon & all seem pretty good. Most say they had too large of primer holes in the early models but that's be fixed. Still seems to be overgassed (which I believe most AR style .308's are). Can fix that w/adj. gas block (recommendations on a decent AGB appreciated!). I've never been a big fan of DPMS but this one seems to be legit, especially for the price. I'll be using it for 0-300yds. as a plinker & hog killer. Besides the 2 things I mentioned, any reason NOT to buy one?

I've heard pretty good things about them. Not sure what else there would be in that price range.

I purchased one from a THF member. I worked up a load shooting 155 TMKs, suppressed. I got it to put five rounds in 2 3/4" at 300 yards, which is plenty good for a mass produced AR in .308 IMO.

The trigger was terrible! Lots of creep, and heavy. Big Fitz traded me a Timney that brakes at a crisp three pound. Much Mo Betta!

It was very over-gassed with my hand load, ejecting at 1 o'clock. I got a Syrac clamp on, adjustable block, and have it one click up from minimum. It's ejecting at 3 o'clock now.

It is the rifle I take with me for hogs and coyotes on my way in and out of the range. It has killed both with no problem. And I do my usual cold bore shot at distance several times a week with it, on the range, from 500 to 700 yards. It has been doing a fine job, especially for the price. I'm not an AR freak, but I recognized the utility of it, especially since I have a roaming sounder of hogs around my place, and am cleared hot on all the neighbor's land.

Yes. Four rail free float pic rail, stainless bolt and barrel, 16" threaded muzzle. Sure you have to drop a little coin to get it tuned up, but it's worth it, it totally changes the quality of the rifle.

I've put about 200 rounds down it the last few months, and if it gives any hiccup, it's just too much carbon on the bolt. A wipe down, and some new oil, and it's back in service.

Just ordered one. Any input/advice for HG (or any other input about this rifle)? I really dislike quad rails so probably go w/the Samson that they make specifically for the G2. Some say they need an AGB & some say it's gassed fine so I'll hold off on the AGB for now.

SLR Rifle works makes a good AGB. 12 clicks of adjustment. 5 clicks is about all mine needs to cyle reliably.

I shot with a guy that had one at Texas multigun a few years ago. It ran very well.

Can you expand on getting it "tuned up"?

Got it yesterday. DPMS includes a packet of oil in the bag all the paperwork comes with. The oil packet busted open & drenched the gun, box & paperwork in oil! There's also a decent gouge in the aluminum lower near the trigger. Besides those 2 issues, I'm digging it so far (haven't shot it yet). The 2 things I didn't like about .308 AR's were:
1) weight
2) price
DPMS fixed both of those concerns w/this weapon. It feels no heavier than my 6.8 but I'm sure w/a loaded mag of 20 .308rds that'll change. Price was good, too. Hoping to go shoot it tomorrow.

I agree. It's not too heavy, and is more affordable than many other options. Did you contact them about their poor packaging skills?

I need to buy an upper block for my vice. Since this gun is of odd sizes, do I buy a block for an AR15 or for AR10 size? I'm thinking ar15 since they say the upper receiver is that size but is the upper truly AR15 size? Thanks!

I am quite sure an AR15 upper block will not fit as it is still larger and not sure if the standard AR10 block will fit either. What work are you planning to perform that will need an upper block, barrel or muzzle brake removal?

BTW, I really like all the design enhancements DPMS has done on this rifle and am very interested in hearing how it performs. This could become the "standardized" (i.e. most popular) AR10 platform if it is adopted by the military. Yes, I know this is a bold statement, but it addresses many of the shortcomings and concerns the military have with the current SASS system.

Im wanting to change muzzle device and hand guard.

When I changed the flash hider on my G2 I had to boil it. Dpms uses rockset. Also used my ar15 upper vise block to change out the handguard.

Got it off by soaking it for about 30 minutes in hot water & using the AAC tool on my Porter Cable impact. It wasn't too bad.

Great rifles....I had the GII SASS and it shot sub moa all day long. My buddy has the GII recon. I recently picked up the GII Compact hunter - 16" barrel, carbon fiber handguard, and weighs in at a whopping 6.9 lbs unloaded and 36" overall.

Still yet to take it to the range to see what it's capable of, but based on the other two I have experience with, I would expect MOA with the right ammo. Had no hiccups with either of the two rifles previously mentioned, so I don't expect anything with this one either.
