Just picked this up from a friend yesterday along with 2 more rifle's. He is moving to the Philippines and can't take any weapons. This rifle is New( never shot) has been sitting in his safe for @ least 6 years. I know every rifle barrel harmonics are different but what ammo have ya'll found that shoots well in this model Savage 17HMR. He gave me 2 boxes of Winchester ammo , but from what I have been reading it probably will group the worse. Thanks Hetman

I tried several different types with that exact rifle. Never could get anything better than 1-1.5" consistently. Sold it on here for basically what I paid for it. Others have had better luck with theirs...I'm not sure why mine wouldn't group. Base, rings, scope were all solid and the shooter wasn't the problem since I can get much better groups than that from my Savage 308 that I replaced it with.
From what I read, you should try the 20 grain bullets. Most of the ammo I tried was 15-17 grains. I think I only tried one 20 grain version. But I've seen reports from others who said they had better luck with the 20 grain. There wasn't much available around here though.

I don't have that rifle, mine is Ruger 96/17 lever action. and it loves Hornady 17gr. I tried the CCI and it was all over the place.

As you said, every rifle will be different. My rifle (CZ-455 Varmint) definitely prefers 17 grain CCI TNT and 20 grain CCI Gamepoints. I have tried the new A-17 ammo....but results haven't been that great. You might want to join the rimfire central forum: http://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/index.phpLots of good info there.

Mine loves the CCI 20 grain FMJ. Not really a game bullet, but works fine on the prairie dogs we typically target. Final 3 shot group when I dialed it in.

I have the stainless version of that exact gun and it likes the hornady 17gr V-Max the most.

Thanks Guys for the info , looking forward to playing with this 17hmr. The only other 17 I have is the original 17 Remington & it is a laser out to 300-350 yards, it almost like cheating

Just put a trigger scale on this savage & it breaks clean @ 3lb pretty good from the factory . I will leave it here until I shoot it awhile and get use to it. Info sheet says it can go down to 1 1/2 - 6 lb. Most of my hunting rifle are set at 2 1/2 lb triggers

copied and pated.
CCI, Federal, Winchester, Remington and Hornady all loaded here at CCI in Lewiston, Idaho with a V-max bullet are identical, with the exception of tip color. Manufactured on the same equip, to the same ballistic specs, using the same components other than color of the tip of the bullets. Obviously the shellcase 'head stamp' and packaging would be different on the various products.

update winchester ammo is no longer made at cci
