Have used them in military and personal use, but never bought one for myself. Now I am. Looking for stopping power on hogs mainly. Just acquired new hunting grounds with mega hog sign. Always used a .38 stub that my grandpa gave before for personal protection, but after watching a video on what a hog can do, I want to be a little more secured. I want one shot stop and if able at least 10 more shots just to make sure its dead. I've shot a 40, 9, 22, 38, 45, 32, 44. 44 is a lot of recoil. I want to stay away from that. I was thinking along the line of a 45. Glock is the kind I've been thinking about. This is where I need some help from you folks. I don't like to carry anything along side my waist but will if I need to. Im 5'6". So little room. Medium hands. I would like to test it out prior to purchase if possible to make sure "its for me".
$1000 is probably my max. Higher or lower if I find the one I like.

In a glock, full size 10mm if you want to use an auto for huntnig. Or getcha a wheel gun in 357 or 44 mag 45 LC, IMHO

Big +1 on the 10mm. I've killed pigs with 45 and 10mm, and there is a noticeable increase on performance with the 10mm. A Glock G20 or the new G40 are a good choice. I love my new G40 shooting the 180 and 200 grain Hornady XTP bullets.

Go shoot as many as you can. If you're hunting, get a 357, 45, or 44 wheel gun. For general use, 9, 40, or 45 would be my choice. Ammo is much cheaper and easier to find.

G40 long slide Glock 10mm.

From your description and wants, i'd go with a Glock 20 in 10MM. An 10MM Witness would be my 2nd recommendation. Always a good choice to shoot them first if you can.

I agree with going with 40 or 45 in either a 1911 or Springfield XDM. I don't like the triggers on Glocks for hunting. Lots of great bulk ammo options in those 2 calibers and they are more than enough to kill a hog.

thanks for all the responses. Few things I guess I didn't mention. I would like to carry it as a concealed and I am not going to "hunt" with the pistol, but just walking to one of my stands is a danger zone. Or just doing a walk around with nephew and nieces. Also ammo accessibility.

Don't know what 44 Mag you shot but you might try one that is ported. It reduces the felt recoil considerably. Pretty much 1 shot stop on any animal.

In that case something like the Glock 30? It's closer to the Glock 19 size but any of the big frame Glock's are gong to feel like a brick to someone with smaller hands. I shoot the Glock 20 and it feels odd but shoots fine. Like some one mentioned, a 1911 maybe commander length with slim grip panels would feel a lot better. I wouldn't plan on 9mm, 40, or 45 rounds stopping a charging hog.

I'd go with 10mm if possible, but 45acp may work fine as well. 10mm is easy enough to find at any store.

I'd want something with a safety if possible, for myself. Personally I'd go with a 1911 because the trigger and feel are better, so maybe a colt delta elite. You could always check out the S&W M&P line if you like the glock type guns but want a safety. Alternatively, you can get a glock and have one added. You should be good to go either way.

If you like glocks and want something more concealable, check out the Glock 29. It will also accept (longer) glock 20 mags, so you can keep one of those in your pocket for extra ammo.

I totally forgot about the non-safety with glock. I want a safety for sure. So that pretty much rules out glock. You guys are a big help. Thanks.

Colt W. Knight is right on IMO. Personally I am a big .357 fan.

this, glocks are great unless you have small hands, truly like holding a brick with a crappy trigger. the commander in .45 will kill any hog on earth.

now....if you are trying to stop one intent on ripping your femoral artery open. screw the handgun, you will be too freaked to hit chit. tac shotgun is what u need like the African PH carries when he goes into the bush to track a wounded cat.

yes, a tac shotgun is what I need or want, but too much to carry during hunting season. Unless I get one like Steve Mcqueen in Wanted: Dead or Alive.
I will post when I purchase one. Still to much to consider.

In that case, my money is on something like a mossberg maverick 88 with 18" barrel in 12ga for about $150 and then I'm searching gunbroker for a used Colt Delta Elite in 10mm. Of course, that's just my personal preference.
