I have an older Remington BDL Long Action 30.06 that I got tired of babying. Basically it had the beautiful wood stock with the black fore end. I replaced with the Remington brand synthetic stock. It was a tight fit and the barrel is not free floating. My questions are:

Does the barrel need to float?
Is this something that can be corrected by a gun smith?
Or do I need to consider a different stock?

Thanks for any input.

Yes, for best results you need to float the barrel but no need for a smith. You can simply remove the barrel and sand out the channel until you barrel does not touch. A good way to do this (from Fireman JG) if in a vice or you have a bipod you can "stand" on, is get a piece of Emory cloth (backed by a piece of cloth cut from an old t-shirt) then loosen the screws until you can slide the cloth under the barrel from the front and, in a sawing motion work it back to the first lug....tighten the screws a bit and continue, doing this until your screws are fully tightened and you can still move the Emory cloth. This gives you a perfect barrel to channel contour.

A simple 'quick fix' is to simply shim the barrel up off the lugs with pieces cut from an old credit card.

Please whatever you do, do not shim it with plastic. I just fixed one last week that was shooting 2 inches at 100. Took it apart and there was a big plastic shim in the recoil area and in the bedding area. We recrowned it, ditched the plastic from the last smith. Bedded and floated it and took it down to .43 with factory ammo.

The shims I used, years ago on a 77V, were only on the pressure points with holes in them for the screws to go through.
It worked perfectly and shrunk my group of 5 to under a dime. I do see this as a short term fix, though, but useful in
determining the effect of floating vs. other potential problems.

Thanks for the tip. I also noticed by screws (holding the stock to the action) don't have have much thread holding the stock on. I had to squeeze by hand for the screw to grab. How precise does my sanding have to be?

What can I expect to pay if i have someone do it for me?

What said above, and a good Dremel tool to open up the barrel channel.
