I may be inheriting one and I know nothing about it. Is it used for anything other than squirrels, rabbits and trapped Coons.

Like that little round and the CZ I have in it outshoots the rest of the rimfire rifles I have owned. Have taken the above mentioned critters plus skunks, armadillo. non trapped raccoons, crows and a coupe coyotes. While not as powerful as the HMR it works with good shot placement.

Now the rub is lack of ammo for the little critter. Hornady has seen fit to introduce a fine little round then since Sandy Hook has not produced any ammo for it so that supply has dried up. What I have found out there is selling for lots higher $$$ than it cost new. Supply and Demand. I think CCI made all the Msch II ammo for the different branders of it but not 100% sure on that.

It is basically a necked down .22LR. It is a good round for small game hunting. It could be used for larger game, but I would probably stick to animals less than 30 lbs.

Forgot to add the case used for it is from the 22 Stinger which is .1 inch longer than the standard LR case to get a little more speed than the 17 Aquilla round that is a necked down 22LR case.

Agree with bull279 it is best for smaller animals as I think the 17HMR is. Though I have killed yotes bigger than that they did go a ways even with good shot placement except for one head shot yote

I agree with kmon1 on the ability to take down coyotes. I used a 17HMR to kill pigs in a trap. Some of them were 100 pounds. But you have to hit them in the right spot like he said. The bullets are hard to find.

Hornady did a great job marketing the HMR. When it hit the market, it was a tremendous success. It was followed up shortly the 17 mach 2. The mach 2 wasn't nearly as popular because it really doesn't have much advantage over the 22 long rifle because at shorter distances the, 22 LR works just fine. Longer distances, you have the 17HMR.

I don't like the 17 HMR for closer up small game hunting because it blows up squirrels and rabbits, but at further distances its great imo.

If I was buying a small caliber it would probably be a 22 mag, but I'm not buying. I may be given a savage Mark ll in 17mach ll due to a death in the family.

I have a 17 hmr haven't used it for a hog yet, still trying to just haven't got lucky will only be a 40-50 yd shot when I do though, I'm curious how it will hold up. Agreed about short distance shots on small game it does do quite a bit of damage on rabbits and squirrels. I've never seen the ammo for the mach II I think I saw it on academy's website once but was sold out.
