This gun started out as a factory Remington Model Seven in 7mm08. Plastic stock, pencil barrel and a 3-9 Nikon scope. I shot it a few times and it was a decent shooter but the barrel got hot quick and I couldn't shoot more than 3 or 4 rounds before my groups started to open up. I couldn't deal with that nonsense. The action and trigger were really nice so I decided to fix 'er up a little....IN A GARAGE!!! YIKES!!! Before After
Haha yea I polished that thing for hours.

I'm glad your happy! The only problem I see is expecting a pencil barrel to be anthing other than a pencil barrel. The penalty for choosing a pencil barrel is that they heat up after three shots. On the flip side if your hunting at 8,000 to 9,000 feet every ouce feels like a pound. The person that the original rifle was designed for, would find your rifle as it is now, as big an abomination as you thought the rifle was. Nobody is wrong! it's just a matter of differing needs and expectations.
for every stereotype there's a prototype don't be the prototype

I believe the only thing we used that was original was the action and trigger.
In my opinion, the rifle, before we rebuilt it was somewhat of a "custom" rifle. The 22" 7mm-08 bbl was not factory, but the origin is unknown. There is only the 7mm-08 stamp just forward of the receiver.
I also believe there was some action work previously performed, as well as trigger work. On my trigger scale this trigger breaks at exactly 2lbs, everytime.
The above poster is correct in his assumption of having a "remage" bbl now. I built a 7mm mag Rem 700 using a Criterion remage bbl a few months back, and it seemed to impress. First 5 rds of factory ammo went 3/4 inch. This was basically a stock Rem700 with just the new bbl. No fancy stock or scope or action work mind you. My first reloads using 168SMKs basically shot the same, and my second load would shoot under half MOA. It was an impressive shooter, but not the kind of recoil that I wanted to deal with for extended shooting sessions, so I sold it a few weeks ago.
I think the OP chose the Criterion is probably because of that rifle. Hes seen my struggles with my McGowan barreled 6.5 creedmoor and erred on the side of safety. Nothing wrong with my McGowan bbl, as I have shot in the .1s and .2s, but it was a real struggle getting there. It seemed that Criterion bbl was a shooter from the get go.
I digress. It was a fun build, and I am sure after hitting the range this week that the OP will be happy.
