I think .30-30 bolt rifles are about ideal for new hunters.
Look on Gunbroker for value. I think the market over values them for whatever reason; that's good news for you.

If you have sentimental attachment to the rifle, then keep it. Otherwise ...

What Syncerus said. I had a 788 that I bought my dad years before his death. I should have seen the sentimental value in that rifle as I am kicking myself for getting rid of it. Mine was a 223 but I think a 30-30 in that rifle would be great.

The 30-30s are fairly rare. If you're looking to sell I'd think $500-700.

If it is real clean...you can get $700...but most want to pay you around $500. Sold one about 4 years ago in a 30-30, think I got $550. It had honest wear. Been hanging onto a 788 44 mag for my retirement fund! wink

788's are great guns, and they bring a substantially higher price in 30-30.
