Here's the deal. I have a Tikka T3 lite stainless, but it isn't bone stock. I had a fancy barrel put on and had it all tuned up. Shoots fabulous. Now I'm thinking about buying a new one in 223. Same lite stainless version, but just the as-purchased version, with no gunsmith tuneup. So, what I'd like to know is how good can I expect the untuned T3 lite to shoot with selected hand loads. I'd really like to hear from those of you that own and shoot the unaltered T3.

Go look at my latest Tikka thread.

I bet $5 the .223 will hold 3/4 MOA on a hand load, 1/2 MOA (100 yards) would not surprise me in the least.

What Jason said +1, my 6.5swede and 270WCF were in that that 1/2MOA range even with my clumsy handloads...and the 270 shot a mix of leftover Factory stuff in 5 brands during my break in period 1 MOA or better. The Swede however did not like my super slow brake in loads in 140gr'ers at starter loads...but shot the Sierra book Hunting load in 120gr SGK's all in one hole more often than not. The faster I ran them the better the Swede shot. Making a target was easy...take blank piece of typing paper & hang it on the back board, put a bullet hole in it...and pound the hole as many times as You wanted..and could keep'em under MOA all day.

The 270 was the same way in some disc'd 130gr Nosler FB SP's that I'd bought as blem's to practice with, and @ max MV's. This is the old style pre BT bullet - really just a BT with a lead SP tip instead of the Delrin tip, and I'd buy a BIG bunch of 'em if I could find 'em again at $14 a 100ct again. Might be a cheap bullet but it was scary accurate and killed WTails with ease outta the T3 270.

I expect the same results from the T3 260 I bought last winter the week after Christmas as the 1st & Foundation piece in the Complete Do Over of ALL my shooters and scopes ....just have not shot yet it...it's sitting next to my desk right now with the NIB 2x10x50 Minox, wearing the new Talley Lites, waiting it's turn.

Between the DinL's several life threatning medical events starting in Febuary, multiple surgeries & weeks in the hospital, and other cancer related procedures, then, during this Spring's 3 seperate Floods here at Lake Texoma that put flood water to within 35-40 feet of the house, and several other attention getters....we've had other issues to address.

OBTW we are still 9'+ over flood stage as of this morning and trying to recover before winter sets in, with the boat house still torn loose from it's moorings during a 60-80mph wind storm the Saturday nite after Mothers Day in May...but still floating in pieces roped together, which is waaay better than 3 of the 5 BH's in the creek with me that are severely damaged, sunk or still perched 20' up in the trees off the ground waiting for the contracters floating crane's to rescue it...It Never Stops up here.

One of the most accurate factory guns made, you should be sub MOA with hand loads. IMO the best factory action you can get. It would make sense to get a aftermarket barrel with a faster twist if your planning to shoot heavier bullets.

With the 223, my options would be a 1 in 8 or a 1 in 12 twist. I'd go for the faster twist. I really don't want to spend the money on an aftermarket barrel this time.

A bolt action Tikka .223 1:8, loaded with 75 gr A-maxes would be a joy to shoot!

I have a tikka 223 and 308 that are unaltered. Both shoot 3/4'groups at 100 years with factory ammo. All day long no question. I am about to buy another.

That's what the Tikka site says, either 8 or 12.

I had a t3 lite SS in 223, with a 1:10 twist barrel. Soon after I got it I dropped it in a B&c medalist stock, which free floated the barrel. I hand loaded for it a little but didn't keep it long enough to do extensive testing, but it would def shoot 3/4 moa.

I am just starting to work with a t3 lite SS in 243, all I did with it is to sand the pressure point out in the factory stock to free float the barrel. Im not going to mess with a stock upgrade on this one. I do think it's going to be a good shooter also.

I like my Tikka's too, but they lose accuracy pretty quick as the barrel heats up. Get about 5 shots with my 30-06 and about 8 to 10 with my .243 before I start seeing flyers. It seems the larger the caliber, the further off the flyer. Just something to think about if wanting to shoot lots of rounds in one sitting.

We have a tikka 223 varmint and I can easily shoot moa or less out to 200 yard with very generic factory ammo. It's a 1:8 twist barrel and it shot a 69gr something that in reloaded brass from HSM about 1/2 at 100yds. Some people here have seen me shoot and Can attest I'm no expert rifle shooter. It's still a bone stock rifle.

Most manufacturers use the same outside diameter on their barrels. Larger hole in the center = less metal + more powder = more heat = quicker and more radical fliers, IMO.

Have 2 (270WSM and 338 Federal) that are stock nothing changed and both are easily sub MOA with ammo they like. Often groups will be sub 1/2 MOA but not always. Know that hold true to 325 yards

My son's bone stock t3 lite stainless in 7mm-08 will shoot 3/4 MOA with the limited factory loads we have tried. Of the flavors of ammo we have shot the worst was only a little over MOA. I can't wait to have some free time to work up a load for it and I can't wait to get one for myself!

I've never had any trouble getting any of my 3 Tikkas to shoot under 1". They are not finicky at all.

Hey 603country , if you don't mind, who did the rebarral on your Tikka? I'm wanting to rebarrel an old one. Thanks.

Jgraider, I wanted a Tikka T3 Lite Stainless but could not buy one at that time in that caliber. I griped about that on this forum and Chadtrg offered to have one made up for me. I went for it. Chad got his gunsmith (Tony, I think) to do the job. I went with a number 4 contour Brux barrel. Took a while, and it wasn't cheap, but brother will that rifle shoot. I could not be happier with that rifle.

I built a .243 on a Tikka T3 barreled action I picked up for $150 and that little rifle with a Redfield 4-7X on it was a real confidence builder.

I was shooting my shop Tikka 308 this morning out to 800 yards. I confirmed zero, and walked it out starting at 300 yards all the way to 800 yards. I was shooting my bulk match 308 Win with 178 A-max load. It shot pretty good!!!!
