Yes...Lucas is bar none the best I've used but they are caliber specific and about $50 a piece. I also have a blue tubed universal one that works well too. The Sinclair caliber specific ones are pretty darn good also.

Even if it's a cheap one it's worth using. Keeps the rod square in the bore, should prevent from beating up the crown and finally it keeps solution out of your action and trigger.

I definitely use bore guides. It protects the crown, I bought them at a gun show.

Yes, I use the Possum hollow rifle specific bore guides, <$20 each. I also have one cheap Tipton universal. No good reason not to use a bore guide, and either coated or carbon fiber rods IMO.

My M1A had to be cleaned from the muzzle. Knocking the primer out of a 12ga. high brass shell worked for that, it fit snugly over the muzzle brake and kept the cleaning rod centered, away from the rifling on the crown.

My Winchester 1885 falling block rifle was similar, I drilled out the primer pocket on a fired shell, chambered it, cleaned with the rod going through the drilled hole, then just closed and re-opened the lever to eject the 'bore guide' after I was done.

I have one of those blue aluminum 'one size fits all' jobs for the bolt-action guns.

Kind regards, charlesb

There is something that I have never understood. How in the dickens does aluminum or brass, both somewhat soft metals, scratch or damage steel, a hard metal?

A soft metal won't scratch a hard metal. But if you add an abrasive like grinding compound, or even contaminating dirt or grit, the abrasive will embed itself in the soft metal, and when you start stroking the soft metal cleaning rod, the embedded abrasive will be carried with the rod....and scratch the hard metal of your barrel.

This is why you don't see serious riflemen using aluminum or brass cleaning rods. Some won't even use Teflon-coated rods. There's always enough unavoidable dirt or grit on the range to embed in the Teflon, brass, or aluminum.

I just use the MidwayUSA bore guides.

Bore guides also keep chemicals and muck from getting down into the action and trigger area.

Thanks dawaba, that makes sense.
